    Moldy PBC??

So I went to go use my PBC for the first time in a couple months, opened it up and its filled with mold and rust I think water from the 2 hurricanes came in through vent and pooled on the bottom and then humidity did the rest. Check out the pictures below. My fault for not using the PBC as much as I should. I did a quick wash with those and plan on firing it and letting it run for about an hour before putting some chicken on it, does that sound go enough? Click image for larger version

Yes that should do good. Just hose it out maybe scrub it with some soapy water and brush it if you have a long brush that will go down in there, then burn it out with a full chimney of lit coals, getting it hot (crack the lid open and leave the rebar out).

I have had this happen a few times in my offset. This year I bought a cover and be sure its totally dry before I cover it up.

Yep, it'll work. Burn it hot.

Thanks for the advice. I also found this article, guess I should have figured this site would have something addressing this issue!

After doing a couple hundred lbs of bacon through my PBC, it had gunk and grime on it like you wouldn’t believe. I tossed a full lit chimney of coals, and a couple logs on top with the bottom vent wide open and the top off and just let her go. After she cooled I hit it with a stiff wire brush everything and it was good as new, even the rebars.

        Burn, scrub, burn.

        Then use.

I had a similar infestation on some of my cast iron kept in the garage. I used a weed burner then scrubbed then on the grill for a good re-seasoning.

Funny, I was gonna say I never had crazy mold issues until I moved to NC... and here you are just an hour away. Just dealt with this on my Big Easy. Sprayed with cooking spray, went max temp for an hour, sprayed with simple green, washed it out, resprayed with oil and max temp for another hour. Re-seasoned and mold free. The BESRG had sat around covered on the deck since last Turkey day. With me being gone all summer it never got used, thus the infestation.

Wear a mask!! You don't want that stuff in your lungs. Don't be a tough guy, and I say that with the utmost respect and sincerity.

I would burn it out first, then scrub and scrub. Then burn it out again, and I mean get the charcoal as hot as possible. Let that sucker burn. Overload the basket, if you have too.

And like Huskee said, wear a mask of you are going to be hanging over the pit. Nasty stuff.
