Everyone has given some sound advice already. I had temp spikes with my PBC due to smoke coming our around the lid (lid leak). I stacked 2 bricks on each side of the lid beside the handle and the leak stopped, the temp settled down, and the meat was delicious. FWIW, the more you used your PBC, the better it will seal if you decide not to install a gasket.

Trouble with temp on PBC

I also just installed lava lock gasket after fzxdoc recommendation. Things were going really great after my first cook with the gasket. Temp was holding really steady at the desired temp. Thanks for that info!
Of course having some left over gasket, I thought let's throw some of this into my weber kettle's lid as well! I don't think that was a great idea, the lid now doesn't close snugly anymore. What have I done...

I was running hot and, as others have said, the gasket helped a lot. Added chunks of wood do invariably get the cooker hotter than without even after the wood has extinguished. Following the exact instructions from PBC, I have found for my sea level cooker that I get lower average cook temps with the lighter fluid lighting technique than with the chimney start. Thus, I use the chimney for things like poultry and the fluid for ribs.
