just picked up this handy tool at Lowe’s to remove or insert the PBC coal basket. This one is $7.98. Click image for larger version

I use a pair of long boot strap pullers that can be found at any western wear store. Provides a nice balance. The wood T-bar handles don't conduct heat and the flat J hook bottoms also work with cooking grates since they span several spacings. The short ones can be used in conjunction with the meat hooks. Since they come in packs of two they make handling heavier meats easier.

      Good idea, Sgt Tyree .

Butchman , your idea is a good one as well. And Lowe's is close by. Thanks!

Whats also nice about both ideas is that they pull double duty with another task.

Thanks for posting a picture. I haven't figured out how to do that yet. Nice thing is the pullers come in two lengths and with two they balance the load better and have replaced my Lodge lid lifter I used to use.

Oh, good to know, Sgt Tyree . Balancing a load of hot coals is a #1 priority. Thanks.

The hooks can be found at Cavenders.com. The shorter set sells for $6.00 and the extra long set sells for $10.00. But where ever you buy them make sure you get ones that have handles that have the metal wrapped around the wood (as pictured in this thread by @fzxdoc). Many of the hooks (they are technically called "boot hooks") are screw in types that won't hold up over time.

Ok. City boy question (though I do own three pair of cowboy boots). How do you use this things?

Any boot with a loop at the back or tabs at the sides. Started using them to move grates around because my gloves were always where I wasn't. Cheap enough so threw a pair in with each grill. Found they work best with the PBC as the basket lives so close to the ground. Necessity is the mother of invention. Also work well for hitchin up your pants when grilling and your hands are greasy.

Well shucks pard, I don't have trouble pulling them on with my hands. Gettin' the darned things off - I could use a tool! Guess I was overthinking it!
