Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.

Interesting I would be anxious to see if this would remedy a few of my issues with the PBC. I love my PBC for certain things but have always felt it was a bigger fuel hog for smaller and faster cooks... i.e. Firing it up for one rack of ribs or 1 chicken...
i definitely think there is some merit to it... that being said I don't plan on jumping on this right away... but something to consider... not a lot different than folks buying a mini or jr in other cookers for travel, size, or fuel considerations.

18" Weber Charcoal Kettle ("Rudy")
Pit Barrel Cooker
Thermoworks Smoke
I think there will be a group of people that like this, though a much smaller group than like the original PBC - mainly because most of us don't regularly smoke on the go. I don't, so I don't need one - but if I did, I think this is kinda cool. I have an SUV, not a truck, so something a little smaller but still pretty much the same could be a good fit. I just don't often smoke meat away from home.

I love My PBC but I can see the use for a smaller addition. There are times when I just want one or two racks of ribs or one chicken and don't feel like lighting up the PBC. Actually I have seriously been considering getting kettle and SnS for those times! This could be the perfect option for those who don't have a Kettle and want to get into smoking and just don't need the capacity. I also think this is what the folks behind "barrel House" were supposed to provide to PBC. Now that they have gone smaller will there be a Sr. version on the horizon? Will there be a 50 gallon PBC?!?! Is the science any different with the Jr? I remember the article about PBC here on amazing ribs how the 35 gallon was the optimum size for the "convection vortex" or something like that going on inside the PBC. Will this change with the Jr???.....In the end all there is, is more toys that I want...lol!!!!

Nate As my mother-out-law likes to say, no matter how thin the pancake there are always two sides, so I try to stay out of the legal arguments.
I have a small family that's been getting smaller since one kid left for college and, while we do entertain, we don't often have parties for 20 or more other people. A 14" drum cooker fit our needs pretty well, and I originally rejected the PBC because I thought it would be too large for us. I'd think there are lots of families in our situation.
The 18.5" PBC has a 30 gallon volume; my 14" drum cooker has two-thirds of the volume, at 20 gals. PBC has claimed that their 30 gal size is the perfect size for flow convection, so from that point of view it's kinda surprising that they would go this route. My 14" cooker actually has an extra inch of clearance between the hanging bar and the top of the coal basket compared to the PBC, so it's not like it's scaled down two-thirds in all dimensions. I haven't seen a PBC Jr. but I would suspect that it's probably designed along similar dimensions (that is, similar height with similar hanging clearance to the original PBC but with smaller diameter).
That all said, I'd seen and tasted some food cooked on a PBC but never cooked with one myself before purchasing my cooker. I've had to modify my lighting procedures slightly but cook temperatures and times seem to be roughly in the same ballpark and although it's hard to remember the exact taste of that sample I think my food is roughly in the same ballpark, too.
Max Good said he's sitting out reviewing the BHC so it'll be interesting if he does a review of the PBC Jr.
