Pitmaster IQ 120 for the Pit Barrel Cooker

I can't find this on the Pitmaster IQ site but it's sold by Pitmaster IQ on Amazon. Anyone tried this? Looks very interesting.

Seems to be piggy backing on the popularity of the PBC.

That thought crossed my mind. Seems to be brand new. No reviews. Seems like it would work though.

I want to get the iq 110. Have only seen the pbc adapter for the iq on amazon. It's directly from the company. I'm guessing they haven't updated site to include this adapter? The gateway drum website recommends the iq if you're going to use a temperature controller. With the few decent reviews that I have seen, along with Gateway recommending, I figure it's worth trying.

***gateway only recommends it if wanting a temp controller. They say it's best without because it defeats the purpose of the twin air intakes. But I believe it's perfect for the pbc. Just not a big fan of electricity. But I believe I'll buy it within a month. Haven't been in a rush to buy because I am only cooking on gateway lately. I break out the pbc's for big cooks

Was hoping you'd chime in. Thought I remembered you mentioning getting the 110. It's got me curious.

I just ordered the Pitmaster IQ110 for the PBC and a standard adapter directly from the company. Decided I could alway use it on my Weber Kettle if I don't like how it runs on the PBC.

phoccer oh boy oh boy....more toys! Can't wait for a full report. And pictures. Lots of pictures. I would use a quality lump charcoal and a fist size chunk...or 2 or 3 chunks that add up to a fist size of pecan...and cook ribs at 275°....I'm gettin hungry

The thing that has me perplexed is that my understanding is the intake doesn't play a huge role once the PBC gets going. You increase temps by sliding the lid off to the side and try to bring down temps by foiling around the rebar. If my understanding is correct, I'm not sure exactly how well this device will work. Maybe that intake plays a bigger role than I understand.

There's a difference between allowing a natural draw of air (as the PBC design allows) and forcing air over the coals.

True, which makes me wonder how well it will work. I think I've talked myself into getting it plus a standard adapter for my kettle. That way I'm not out anything if it fails on the PBC.

The single 3" intake port on the PBC has been marketed as a feature, not a bug. A device like the IQ should work fine. What matters is how many CFM of air you can get through the port, and how quickly it can adjust (basically, throttle response). Think of a primary 2-bbl carburetor vs. a supercharger.

Jerod Broussard has a temperature controller for his PBC. Perhaps he'll chime in here.

Looks like I could order the IQ 110 designed for the PBC, then buy a standard adapter from the PitmasterIQ, which would allow me to move the device between my PBC and kettle. I know the device works on the kettle so might be worth a shot to get a device that would let me play with each. If it fails on the PBC I can just use it on my kettle. Feel like I'm talking myself into this.
I sent an email to the company to see if I can buy the one for the PBC and then an extra standard adapter.

I'm sure you're going to have great fun playing with it, phoccer . I'm eager to hear how it works out for you with both the kettle and the PBC.

I use my temp controller to aid the air vent. When you load it up with 4 briskets or 3 good sized pork butts the barrel temp will plummet when the meat stalls.

I've had an iq110 for about 4 years now (or more) that I use on my WSM 22. It works extremely well.

Wife was giving me a hard time about ordering the IQ110 this morning and said adjusting the cooker was part of BBQ. I asked if she regularly opened the door to the oven or turned down the temp dial to get heat regulated while she was cooking dinners.

And then what did she say after she took her foot out of your arse?
Just tell her the pbc doesn't allow for adjustments...with the iq you can now adjust with a dial

I can't win her over on the technical arguments, ever. She made another comment this morning, paused, then mentioned how much we'll save not going out to eat. Then said I better plan to smoke a lot of food. It's all good!
