when I was younger, we used a coffee can with a roll of toilet paper doused in rubbing alcohol as warmers in our deer stands, no smoke. dunno if that can be modified to work to light charcoal, or if it would alter the taste.

Sounds like DIY Sterno. Rubbing alcohol should not be consumed. That stated it should burn off and work.

Sorry my comment is in the wrong place. My screen changed pages and I did not catch it.

Starter cubes make a big difference. For me, Not using Kingsford also makes a big difference (This isn't a knock on Kingsford as they do make a good product). One of the reasons I prefer to use B&B briquettes is that they burn WAAAY cleaner even when getting started.

Agree. B&B put out much less smoke when lighting.

Rubbing Alcohol soaked Cotton Balls, clean burn and inexpensive. I use three in order to starter my chimney.
Kingsford Blue Bag and Mesquite charcoal is all that I have ever used. The KF smokes initially.

Yes KBB does smoke "a bit". I had a new neighbor come running across the street and into my backyard thinking my house was on fire.. lol

Yeah, I had a neighbor call me one day and say the back of my house looked like it was on fire.

You could inhale the smoke and blow it through a toilet paper tube stuffed full of fabric softener.

I’ve tried that..but paper towel tubes work better. More filtration by the time it comes out the other end.

I suppose paper towel tubes would work better, but I never owned any cleaning supplies when I was in college.

Meaty discussion? Yessiree, my technical expertise in smoke dissemination is beyond reproach. 🙄

You mean ol blake/josh who claims to be a woman? Who also is a vegetarian on a BBQ website devoted to meat? And is asking for help with an indoor vent hood not related to the original question…..4 years after the original post? My guess is we won’t be hearing from her too much more.

I'm afraid he took Murdy's advice, which turned out to be really bad advice.
