doctorak , here's the topic that I wrote with photos on how I trashed the gas ring plate on my side burner by lighting my chimney with it: https://pitmaster.amazingribs.com/fo...autionary-tale
I put the chimney right over the burner, not on the grate over it, because that's how I had seen several folks do it. But on my Weber Summit gasser, it was a killer.
The good news is that it only took $10 to repair it. Gotta love Weber parts and service.

When I got my Weber Genesis, my VERY FIRST TIME USING IT, I thought you lit the side burner then closed the lid and put things on top of the side table to warm. This was like a week after purchase. It melted everything in there, the ring, the knob, the little plastic button for the ignition. And left a nice brown stain on the stainless steel side table to boot.
Thankfully, I bought from a great local hardware shop, and when I explained it to them (after no doubt giggling to themselves for an hour) they said no problem, we'll take care of it through Weber for you. A week later they had come to my house and replaced the whole side table without me or my wife even knowing they had been there.
The other cautionary tale about this is to always buy from smaller local hardware shops if you can. I can't imagine the big box boys giving me that kind of service.
Anyway, I digress...yeah I put the chimney over the grate, not right on the burner. But I'll definitely monitor it a little more closely if I ever try again. TBH, I don't think this saves much time over just using a lighting cube, it just happened to be more convenient this time since I had food already hanging in the PBC and wanted to minimize the amount of time I had the chucks out of the cooker.
