    Some mold growing in pbc

I just opened my PBC to get it ready for smoking ribs tomorrow for Easter dinner and noticed some mold growing on the inside. It's located down at the bottom third of the drum, not a lot , but is there. How do folks deal with that as Noah's site says leave the inside alone after cooking. I'm thinking of filling the charcoal basket and just burning it off. Will that suffice?

Thomassen, I don't have a PBC "Yet" but I Think If I Ran Into a Mold Problem I Would Wipe the Barrel Out With Hilex (Bleach). Any Oders or❓ Should Burn Off Immeditely! I think I Would Leave the Vents Open Going Forward, Air Circulation and Sun Light are Your Friends With Mold! A UV Light will help as Well! fzxdoc , Kathryn, is the

Opened the Weber up a year or so back and had mold. Followed MH's instructions and cleaned / burned the living daylights outta it. Remember, open all vents if you cover the cooker. Haven't had a problem since.

Mold was result of closing vents and covering cooker.

        Good luck! --Ed

Ugh. Mold. I got some on my Grill Grates in my gasser, so they were easy to take out and clean, following Meathead's steps linked to in RobertC 's post.

Just be sure to follow each step carefully: burn, scrape/scrub, wash down, then burn again. I wore a mask while cleaning my Grill Grates just to be sure not to inhale any mold spores. I also wiped down every surface on the inside of my gasser with a Clorox/ soapy water solution, let it sit, and followed by a good wiping with clear water, even though there was not visible mold in it, just the Grill Grates. Of course I fired up my gasser before and after the cleaning steps too.

I think that mold has got to be the one exception to not cleaning the inside of the PBC. You just got to suck it up and follow Meathead's steps. You sure don't want mold spores coming back even after heating the thing to max temps. You'll never get the insides scraped clean, but scrubbing down those walls with Char-Broil's Cool Clean Brush or a plastic putty knife and lots of soap and water will get a lot of the newer surface grease off so new spores have no place to go. The stuff underneath is pretty charred.

When I was done, I washed all the brushes and tools I used to clean the grates in Clorox + Soapy Water and rinsed well.

Good luck with that yucky job.

Mold? That's one thing I haven't had a problem with. I typically crack the top at the end of my cooks to superheat anything that dripped/dropped. Rust, however, is something I've noticed right under where the coal basket/ash catchers sits. Is this pretty typical or do I need to break out the power tools and sand that off?

Just burn it out! That's all it takes. but make sure to check out Meathead's article regarding mold.

I got some mold in the Performer last fall. I emptied a full chimney into it and burned out the mold.

That's my usual approach with the BGE. Doesn't hurt that it gets HOT!

Until I got mold on the Grill Grates in my gasser, I never had a problem with mold in all my years of grilling. I'm obsessive about heating the gasser up to warp heat after every single cook and scrubbing down the grates with a wire brush. Ditto with my smokers. When they cool completely, they get cleaned from ash and if necessary any residual grease on the walls is scraped down before the grill/smoker is covered--all vents wide open.

We have bears where we live, so keeping a clean grill is a must unless you want a big furry beast shoving the grill off the deck in an effort to get inside it, as has happened to friends of mine. So even though my grill is as clean as I could get it after every single cook, and I use my grills and smokers often, I still got that powdery white mold on the Grill Grates. A word to the wise.

Hahaha, I can't imagine coming outside and seeing a bear having a wrestling match with my grill! Stay safe out there!

It's very odd but I have a neighborhood bear that doesn't bother the webber or the smoker!
Can't say why but I wont complain.

Used to live in bear country at my ranch in Idaho, but never had a bear attack my grill there. Having a pack of hounds that hunted bear mighta had something to do with that!!! I do miss bear stroganoff tho!!
