Pit Barrel Charcoal Basket Plate modification

I like others purchased the optional plate that fits under the Charcoal basket for easy clean-up. The problem was that while pulling the basket out, you still had a chance to spill all the ashes back into the drum. So came up with this idea which is cheap and has past several cook outs. I took a bolt, 2 washers and a lock nut and attached it to the basket grate. The excess bolt extends down to the opening of the slot which keeps the plate locked on the basket. very clever. I just bought the pan and it has worked well. I was thinking of a way to keep the pan from coming off. I was going to safety wire the two together. I am betting that your method works longer

I am still a pick-up and dump type of a PBC owner. Call me old fashioned. But this certainly would be a clear option. Nice DIY action going on here!

Do you slide the bolt back and forth when you want to take the plate off? Knock on wood, I have not had the plate come off while pulling it out. I do like to take it off to scrape out some of the grease and ash that sticks after a cook after I dump the ash.

No I dump the ash very easy, if their is grease I save it to burn off next time. But you could do what you suggest. Thanks

I use foil because my thought was the pan would/could come off too easy. Thanks for sharing your mod.

lschweig Halfway careful is the problem. Oh, *I'm* careful, sure...but sometimes Mr Alcohol takes over and he can get mighty careless.

Huskee then you would be advised not to play with fire.
I have had crews that frequently had the brown bottle flu.

lschweig I don't move it when it's hot anyway. I worked too hard to build that new deck.
