So I was browsing the PBC website this morning and saw that they now have a Grill Grate. Has anyone tried one? What are the advantages/disadvantages of having one? It's been a while since I've bought anything from them and this money is burning a hole in my pocket. Any feedback?

Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.

If you haven't gotten one and your money is burning a hole in your pocket that bad then get a real grill like the Weber kettle 22" or 26" and the SnS

I don't think they are necessary for the PBC. Here is what I think......
Look, I love my PBC. I think everyone does, that owns one. But for grilling, it's not ideal. Since the PBC's fire basket is so much lower than the grate, when compared to other grilling surfaces, you really can't achieve High temp searing, like you could with say the SNS or a Kamado. That's not to say that you can't grill on the PBC, you can, but its not the best option. The sides of the barrel make it awkward to flip foods and make sure you wear a glove.
For me, the main advantage of Grill Grates is even heat dispersion, the griddle surface and their ability to block flare ups while cooking. You don't really have these problems while grilling with the PBC. Hot spots are all but negated by how low the fire basket is in the barrel, which allows the heat to evenly disperse. Equally, you don't have to worry about flare ups. So really, I would only be buying these for the griddle surface. Unfortunately, the surface really wouldn't be hot enough to sear effectively. Sure, you could rig something up to do it, but its not practical. IMO.
Just my two cents. If you get them, let us know how they work.Last edited by Spinaker; February 12, 2017, 09:26 PM.
