A few weeks ago while working on the bark on a packer brisket using the grate I almost dumped the whole shebang into the charcoal and finally figured out that the barrel was out of round by close to 1/2". It only has taken me 6 months to figure this out as I rarely use the grate. My simple quick fix was to put a bar clamp across the widest part and work the very top of barrel back into round. It took quite a bit of force as the barrel had a memory. It only took around 15-20 minutes to accomplish the task and there was no damage to the barrel.
Since then I no longer worry about the grate slipping off the pins and there is a lot less leakage around the lid for obvious reasons.
I should mention to use a bar clamp with fixed clamp faces not the ones with swivel faces. Also the diameter is around 20" so you will need a rig big enough to handle that.
