Lighting the PBC is nothing different than the norm in my opinion. I usualy add about half a chimney to old charcoal (briquettes or lump) and just leave the rebar out until my Maverick hits around 275. Lately I've been just adding fire starters to a full basket.
I do shake out the basket and clean out the ash before every cook though.
All, I finally got around to cooking on the pit barrel cooker. Two pork butts, nearly 17lbs. An overnight cook last night to avoid the rain today. On at 8pm, wrap at 2am, done at 545am. Less than 10 hours, first sub 12 hour pork but smoke for me! We'll see how things taste this evening when my best friend from childhood comes in for a visit to try it out. Here's are pictures pre and post cook. Cheers! (Well... apparently I can't upload files, it's saying all my pictures are "corrupted" So, your guess is as good as mine. Alas, a link to Flickr with last night's and this morning's photos along with the rig in box and freshly out of box).
