I was watching Man Fire Food on the Travel Channel last night (good show by the way) and they showed a guy using what looked like a bullet smoker in which he hung chickens like a PBC. Anyway he was using Thaan Pok Pok charcoal, which if nothing else looked interesting (albeit a little pricey). The said it burn longer and hotter than normal briquettes. Curious if anyone has used it before.

I have never tried that kind of charcoal. It appears to be a very low-cost version of true Japanese Bichotan charcoal. Real Bichotan is wicked expensive, and is the Koenigsegg of the charcoal world - it burns so hot it will melt stainless steel. It is amazing stuff, I have used it only for very specific preparations. It does not act like regular charcoal in any way. You can put it out in water and then relight it, but you need either a long burning gas flame or already hot coals to get it going. Certainly worth checking out. http://korin.com/TK-636-06-33?sc=56&category=17860587

There is excellent background on the Pok Pok charcoal in a recent Lucky Peach article: http://luckypeach.com/what-is-thaan-...l-andy-ricker/
