    Leakey PBC

Hello all-I’m losing a lot of smoke under the lid of my PBC. What can I do to seal it?

mobilemike54 Is this a new unit? If so, it takes a few cooks to get the indentation around the rim of the lid a little gunky to help it to seal. You can speed up this process by applying some cooking spray in that channel. You can also add some weight to the lid to help hold it down tighter. If you've cleaned that area, that will usually cause leakage.
If this is an older unit that you've cooked on before and haven't cleaned the lid, check that the lid isn't bent.

Spray the inside of the lid with cooking spray or use some kind of other fat. Put the lid on and then add weight to the lid. Bricks, stones, irons or anything heavy. Do it evenly, so there is equal pressure around the lid. After a few cooks, it will seal much better. Adding oil to the rim will help to gunk it up and for a great seal.

I still add weight top my PBC lids when I am cooking.

I don't have a PBC, but welcome to The Pit.

I have had this challenge since I got my PBC...Mine only seals up a couple of hours into the cook once the "seasoning" in the lip of the lid heats up...I usually use several binder clips on the lid to help it seal in the early stages...

I just got a new lid so I will see what happens in the future...

Do a few pork butts. They will help gunk up the rims quickly.

I use a couple of bricks on the lid if temp is going / staying too high.

I hope you appreciate the beat down the Hawks put on the Gophers this past weekend.

                I've used LavaLock gasket.
They last about a year and are easy to replace when they start leaking smoke again.

As others have said, keep cooking and it will seal up. Mine gets so stuck I keep a rubber mallet nearby to get it loose when I'm cooking. I also sprayed a little cooking oil in there to help it along.

                    My PBC is like that.
My one PBX is getting there.
The other PBX just has a slight tackiness to it.

Yes, welcome to the pit! Been a while since my PBC was new, but I do remember it took a few (half dozen, mebbe?) cooks to get the lid to seal a bit more. I still see a little bit of smoke coming out from time to time? Not much, though.

Like a few people have said, putting a few bricks on top works. I'd use an old bath or kitchen towel to avoid scraping up the lid.
