Sorry for the overuse of quotation marks, but they were necessary in this case.
Long story short, I found a Stump's Baby vertical cabinet smoker on Facebook Marketplace. Down here in Florida there are any number of large smokers listed alongside the WSMs and Brinkmans. But this was pretty much what I thought I was looking for. Good capacity, insulated, charcoal, BBQ Guru compatible...a great compliment to my PK Original and PBC. The KBQ had become problematic in that sourcing and storing wood after the move from the northeast was not practical and it needed to be closely tended. The food it produced was amazing, but I was looking for something a bit less needy (yes, getting lazy!).
Anyway, North Naples is home to Dana "Big Papa" Hillis, an award-winning Pit Master who offers classes and catering. He decided it was time to part with some of his 60+ cookers and the Stump's Baby was one. He had helped a friend buy it directly from Stump back when he still owned the business. It had been used for all of about six cooks and they sat inside for many sad years.
Big Papa and his friend delivered the new Baby today. He had it seasoned and ready to go. I'll be burning it in and cooking a small pork butt tomorrow. Can't wait to load this puppy up!
