I'm taking delivery of a 1050 this coming week, and I was wondering if I should improve the thing before I start using it. Normally, I like to live with something for a while before I start tinkering with it, but I heard the firebox liner is a lot easier to install before it gets used too much.

I haven't made any mods to mine, haven't found 'em necessary. But I don't use it heavily either. The firebox liner is a good one, but might not be necessary for a while. Also, order a few extra door switches or be prepared to hotwire them!

Current line-up of cookers: Oklahoma Joe's Bronco Pro, Masterbuilt Gravity Series 1050, Blackstone ProSeries 4 Burner 36" griddle, Weber Performer Deluxe and Weber Smokey Joe.
I have used my 1050 a ton since I got it a couple of years ago, and I never installed a firebox liner. Not saying it isn't useful, but I just haven't seen a need for it.
I do highly recommend the manifold cover and drip pan brackets available from LSS Mods. There are many other upgrades they offer, but I have found those two items to be very handy.
Aside from that, the one thing I wish I had done during assembly was to grab a tube of LavaLock RTV and seal up the small gap in the front left corner of metal pan that goes under the manifold. Dripping grease from that area is a common complaint with these grills.

I agree with Steve R.
I haven’t needed/bothered to do anything with the firebox liner on my 1050.
Grease fires can be common with these cookers if you don’t clean regularly. The manifold cover is supposed to reduce or prevent grease fires by better grease management.
Mine also drips grease. It isn’t bad enough to make me take it apart to install a gasket, but it is an annoyance. Do it with the initial assembly if you can.
With all that said, I love mine. It’s my go-to for hot and fast cooks, second in line for low-and-slow (behind a Primo XL) and often used as a holding cabinet when we host bigger gatherings.
