Personally if I were doing shots of liquor, I would follow it with beer, so beer would be the "chaser".
As I like to savor my bourbon or whisky, and am not a big fan of shots - I like to taste the bourbon, not just feel a burn as it goes down my throat real quick. I'll pour a finger or two in a glass, neat, and it will last me for a bit, with no "chaser" required.
All that said - I am more a beer than a liquor guy, 99% of the time. I may purchase one or two bottles of quality bourbon per year. And I never ever order it out (not that I go out these days). Much more economical and enjoyable to enjoy quality Kentucky bourbon or Tennessee whiskey at home, versus asking for "top shelf" stuff at a bar.
