Yup, particularly bottles of wine someone or some place recommended. I cannot recall the specifics, but sometimes just opening and smelling the "wine" left both my bride and I going "oh, Noooo!". Down the sink. There have been some rubs that looked good, but then upon opening and tasting a small amount, it hit to the trash bin.
Ooops. Just noticed you were specific to new bottles of liquor, so forget I mentioned the rubs.

I would have used that bourbon as a mixer, or kept it around for someone that mixes bourbon. Sorry didn’t care for the Wolcott. It’s one bottle that TW carries that I have had and thought was actually decent. Being it’s a Spirits Direct bottle, they should have had a tasting bottle available. (Coming from the guy that should have tasted a bottle a few days ago).
I will say the bottle of bourbon I bought the other night, it’s not my favorite. And in the cabinet of selections, it will probably be one of my least used but I’ll drink I also bought a bottle of scotch years ago, blind. It’s not really my thing but wanted to give it a go. I still have it. Once a year i think I break it out and have a small pour.

Bkhuna, just 2 days ago I was in Total Wine for the first time and on a suggestion from a TW employee I bought a bottle of Wolcott Bourbon. Now you have me wondering (Lol). No big deal to me as I am far from a Bourbon Expert. I have tried enough Bourbons to realize that I like some more than others. If I don't care for it a "sipper" I'll use it as a "mixer".
I was gifted a bottle of peach flavored whiskey for my 40th. I was going to toss it but I decided to hold onto it for a while. A few months later lo and behold my wife’s friend and her now husband used it for mixers for a drink they made at a party we hosted. Used more than half of it.
Would pour out a crappy bottle of wine but not booze — at least not until it sat untouched for a few years.
someone once brought a bottle of grapefruit vodka to my house (no idea why) and it sat close to unused for a few year. Somehow made it thru half a bottle over the final year or two before finally tossing it. That’s the closest I’ve come to tossing out a new bottle liquor
Reminds me of back a few decades ago, when you could still find Fresca. My friends and I made summer drinks for the beach, with Fresca, grapefruit vodka, and whizzed in the blender with ice. Was pretty good.
Yup. Some sub-$20 bottle of Kirkland bourbon that was awful. Same with cheap $5 wine. No desire to ruin a nice evening by pairing it with liquor and wine I hate. A friend also gifted me a bottle of raspberry vodka that was awful as well.
I like a nice single malt and had read and was recommended a bottle of Laphroaig. It tasted just like peat moss and not in a good way. I kept it for parties and noticed one of our friends always went to it, so I gifted him the rest of the bottle...
For me I find that bad bourbons and bad whiskeys seem to make better BBQ sauce than the expensive ones. I find that bourbons and whiskeys that are too smooth disappear in the BBQ sauce where the ones that are harsh will stand up to the other bold flavors that you put in your BBQ sauce.
