I picked up a bottle of Hornitos Black and tried their old fashioned recipe. In this case I used half of the simple syrup the recipe called for.
HORNITOS BLACK BARREL TEQUILA OLD FASHIONED
- 1 1/2 parts Hornitos® Black Barrel Tequila
- 1 part simple syrup
- 1/2 part amaro liqueur
- 2 dashes bitters
- 2 dashes orange bitters
Combine simple syrup, Hornitos® Black Barrel Tequila, amaro and bitters. Add ice and stir. Strain over fresh ice and garnish your tequila Old Fashioned with an orange peel.

Excellent. I’ll have to see if I can find a place that has the hornitos black to give a try.
I had a new beverage last night at the restaurant we went to - was called a Southern Charm and the server said it reminder her of spiced sangria. I thought it was decent, only had the one though. It reminded me of an old fashioned in a way with bourbon and bitters, but the Cabernet syrup is where the change came from.

barelfly I first tried the black at a bar I frequent that has a "shot and a beer" menu I gravitate to. My girlfriend and I were at the liquor store and she bought it knowing that I liked it.
Southern Charm sounds... Interesting.
