Schlitz was nasty. Back in the day growing up in Milwaukee, I lived next door to a Miller master brewer. He called Schlitz, Pabst, and most other cheap beers horse piss. Probably the only reason Schlitz made this far is that it was the only beer you could get at the ball park.

As I recall a new management team took over Schlitz in the 70s. They were proud of the fact that they had "modernized" the brewing processes, and gave boastful interviews in the business press about how they were the hot shots shaking up a stodgy industry. The problem was they didn't pay any attention to how the beer tasted (namely, a lot worse than it used to), and sales dropped off sharply. I'm surprised that the brand has lasted this long.

In the 50's Schlitz was the best selling beer-----subsequently Budweiser became #1----I believe the reason for that is Schlitz slightly altered their brewing process in order to save a few bucks---the change did not fool the Schlitz drinkers---they knew something had changed and didn't like it---so, they departed the Brand for competitors---that is what I learned after working for JSBCO (Jos Schlitz Brewing Co) for three years in the early 1970's---

Only time I ever tried Schlitz was back in college. And on purpose. A few times a month we would find some odd ball beer and come up with a theme for the night. I don’t remember what that was with Schlitz, but Flannel and Forty’s was one example!

But I do have this cool mirror that my wife’s grandmother gave me when her grandfather passed away. It hung in his pool room, I keep in the garage where I have a few other beer and bourbon type things hanging as well. I guess it’s really a collectors item now!

Started with granddad, always from a long neck bottle. I would toddle around and take an occasional hit.
