I should have mentioned this before, but when you are passing through these small Texas towns be sure and check out the courthouses. If you happen to get to Hallettsville, be aware that the courthouse there was used in the movie of "The Best Little Wh***house in Texas." I've been told that some of the cast and crew stayed in Luling, home of City Market, as johnjohn pointed out above. The establishment itself (no longer in existence) was near LaGrange.

You know, I can't read or hear the word "LaGrange" with out going "A-how-how-how". I know you Texans known this, but the ZZ Top top song was about that same shack (uh, house of ill repute) just outside of LaGrange, a-how-how-how...

I don’t how the stuff that guy did exposing corruption, fraud and board of health reports didn’t get him killed. Every Friday night it was "slime in the ice machine" and once I saw him interview a judge and ask him why he was fixing so many tickets.

I had the opportunity to meet him once back in the mid-1980s. I was filmed in my boy scout uniform raising the American flag on the KTRK campus for a PSA commercial. He came out and signed some Channel 13 stuff for me.

Rumour spreadin' a-'round in that Texas town
'bout that shack outside La Grange
and you know what I'm talkin' about.
Just let me know if you wanna go
to that home out on the range.
    They gotta lotta nice girls.

    Have mercy.
A haw, haw, haw, haw, a haw.
    A haw, haw, haw.

Well, I hear it's fine if you got the time
and the ten to get yourself in.
    A hmm, hmm.
And I hear it's tight most ev'ry night,
but now I might be mistaken.
    hmm, hmm, hmm, hmm.

    Have mercy.

I knew a guy who had hair just like that. He was from Oklahoma, need I say more?

True that, I've seen a bunch of them over the years. They all have a little (or maybe a lot) of Texas lore about them. Here's the one in Lockhart (Caldwell County) where CaptainMike and I had Sunday lunch. All of them are different and some even more elaborate...

Today was Franklin's BBQ. I think the pic of it in the video says it all:

You didn’t mention Kruez which in a previous video I thought you indicated was the best so far. Are they # 2?

I'd put Kreuz, Killen's, and Heim all tied for #2.

It's funny how different people's perception and experience are totally different. I would agree that the one time I did the Franklin experience it was top notch and probably the gold standard. That said, Killen's (as well as several others I could mention) do it just as well. Kreuz; however, has disappointed me the last two times I was there. As I mentioned in another post, we had lunch last Sunday and the brisket was stringy and "pot roasted" which indicates overcooked. It wasn't any better than Dickey's. Perhaps we got a bad sample, but two times in a row for me is enough to say thanks but no thanks to Lockhart.

As to Franklin's not being open, we had that discussion at the meat-up but I guess you weren't in on the conversation. They announced opening up at the latter half of June but only had curbside at the moment. That said, it was good that you at least got to try it but count your blessings you didn't have to stand in line for 5 hours. The restaurant inside is small and doesn't add much to the experience.

Where to next wcpreston? I'm enjoying your adventure !!

Today we went to two places in the SW Austin area. An old favorite (The Salt Lick) and Valentina's. The latter may now be my favorite.

          The Salt Lick:

BTW... agree w/you on The Salt Lick. What my wife liked was the more subtle beef-forward flavor, rather than tasting salt and pepper too much. It's also the only place I know to get bison ribs, which were pretty dang good. Oh, and that cobbler was amazing.

I am loving your journey. There was a post after the pandemic started about the hoarding of toilet paper questioning whether there would be enough food to use all the toilet paper. Now the question is, do you have enough toilet paper? LOL

Thanks! I'm loving the differences between us as well. For example, she prefers less salt/pepper, I can't get enough of it.

Make sure to watch the Valentina's video and listen for her comments once I unwrap the meat. SOOOO funny.

Thanks for including the Devil's Backbone video. I used to drive through there on my way to a deer lease I was on near Johnson City many years ago.

These videos of places I want to visit are the next best thing. Their benefit is getting objective opinions rather than promoted stories. Great work! (Or play)

My favorite outtake today. I'm filming. Four guys see me filming, and walk directly behind the camera just yammering away.

Don't feel like The Lone Ranger. According to Guy Fieri, just getting the intro to some of the places he goes to on DDD done can take forever.

Today's shoot was at Louis Mueller's BBQ in Taylor, TX. Here's some pics while the video renders.

BTW.. best beef rib I've ever had. Note that they smoke them separately. Everyone else I've had roasts the whole rib, then slices it to serve. This is way better.
