Interesting I would've thought Franklin BBQ would have been on the list at least somewhere if not no. 1? Having never had anything on that list OR Franklin BBQ...I really can't say either way thought!

I can attest to the fact that Sam's Texas Sub Shop in Norfolk, Virginia is pretty good - but I'd hardly call it a BBQ joint. They have a brisket sub. That's about it.

Best BBQ in this area (that I've found) is Dave's BBQ on Virginia Beach Boulevard. Just in case anyone is visiting

Normally, when my wife and I want really good BBQ - we go to Barco, NC and eat at Currituck BBQ. Now that we found Dave's, we haven't found the need to push south.

If you guys ever come north try Willards BBQ. They have two now but one is right off Rt 28 close to Dulles airport. Pretty good in my opinion.

My wife was stationed at the Pentagon, and lived in Gainesville during the week. When I'd head up to visit, there was a BBQ joint/truck stop on 29 that was always packed. Wanted to try it, but never got around to it.

Other rating requirement is only 2 locations per state and there were 2 from Texas - #15 Amarillo, Tx and #14 Santa Fe, tx.

Skipping Lockhart or Austin is all you need to know about why they screwed up.

And of those two they arent that great. I would rather eat brisket from Buc-ee’s.

To echo Steve B a little, our patio is my favorite BBQ joint. It's still fun, usually, to check out a reputable place.

Miami made the list.....but yelp reviewers are "special". The place listed here in Miami is closed. On a Friday night. It’s not even 9 PM. It closed at 4 PM!

Its open tomorrow (Saturday) from 08:30 - 14:00.

Exactly what kind of place can this be? Calling BS on this list.

It would be interesting to know how they determined "best" on such a subjective item like food . Usually best is determined by quantifiable data such as is used for grills, smokers, equipment, etc, not something determined by personal taste .(Pun intended) . I have had many people say my ribs are far better than a local well known bbq joint, based on taste. They thrive due to their popularity and brick and mortar location versus my back deck. I am sure many of you in the Pit produce superior bbq to restaurants. Most if not all restaurants that have award winning bbq do not serve their award winning food in mass quantities.

You are absolutely right, smothering some kind of meat in BBQ sauce don't make it BBQ.

Honestly I am personallly tired of hearing about Franklins, rendezvous, Arthur Bryant's etc..

Over and over over and over.... I get it. They and others are the Best for a reason. CREDIT GIVEN. Okay already. oh look, the Patriots are in the super bowl again, yippee, Yes, yes, Ditka should have given the ball to Walter Payton. We know already, it's burned on the brain.

Being in an industry where you put your self on a plate and leave yourself open for all to criticize I am not the biggest fan of "yelpers." Many are just idiots while others fancy themself renowned food critics because they can tell the difference between Al pastor and Carnitias on their whole wheat flour tortilla with salsa on the side. Others focus simply on cost or portion size etc.. now there are many who do an honest good job of reviewing but those seem to be fewer and fewer these days as negatively tends to motivate more than complimentary words.

I am referencing Yelp all the time mainly to check other places to try at a later date, not for work. People are cruel and negative to places and owners who provided me a fabulous sandwich, service or a plate. So take this list with a GRAIN OF SALT. It was compiled with an ALGO as mentioned.

As the twig is bent bent so grows the tree.

i DO APPRECIATE the list of smaller local joints I've never heard of. I am more likely to go to one of these types of places than the big boys. So thank you Spinaker for this... well.... how about "list of places?"

My favorite is Number 14 with the photo of..... what is that..... photo of BLT and fries.

            I'd eat that!

We have a local butcher shop/deli that has great products, service and atmosphere. For whatever reason, I looked at their yelp reviews this morning and while most were favorable, the ones that weren't were absolute BS. One clown gave a single star because his sandwich didn't taste very good. He went on to say that he had a cold and couldn't taste anything! Anti-social media, I don't use any of it.

Several gave unfavorable reviews because there were too many "locals" in line at lunch time, WTF?!! Like Yogi Berra once said about a BBQ joint in St Louis "Nobody goes there any more, it's too crowded". I judge a business by how many locals go there, i.e. eat at the Mexican restaurant where the Mexicans eat.

I know New England does't get a lot of love for BBQ, but this place should at least get some hugs.

I'm sort of glad the three or so places around me (or is it six? I'm not telling) who have, in my opinion, BBQ as good as or better than what I make when I reallyreally hit the sweet spot did not get mentioned. I hate standing in line to eat excellent food. Or worse, making reservations when I am hit with a craving for, say, brisket. Then again, our favorite rib place closed, so my wife now buys a slab every month or so for me to fix. Our brisket place and our pulled pork place and our full meal place are still relatively undiscovered.
