The Big Chicken Wing Chow Down! Hooters vs Buffalo Wild Wings vs Wing Stop

I sure hope some fancy New York Times food critic don’t steal my posting title idea for their own! …. I visited 3 different wing joints the last few weeks for the first part of my goofy little wing reviews. I visited only national chains, instead of local places. Personally I’d rather hear about some place I already know about than some obscure place I’ll never have a chance to visit. To make it a little more even for each place, I ordered bone-in only instead of boneless and I tried to stay with classic sauces or rubs instead of some far fetched rub/sauce that only one place might serve. Most places serve bleu cheese or Ranch for dipping, I stuck with Ranch at each place. I also ate at least one wing of each variety first without dipping it in their sauce, didn’t want to obscure the flavor of the wing itself. First up………

    HOOTERS
The service at Hooters was the best of any of the restaurants I’ve visited lately, including the recent hamburger joints. Both times I went there I was instantly greeted with a friendly smiling face and great service. I know what you’re thinking but it’s true…🥸 After sitting down it wasn’t long before I was greeted by my waitress asking about my drink and food order. 👍 I promise you, this was kinda rare at several places I’ve been. After taking my order she winked at me and asked for my number. She seemed kinda let down when I told her I was not available and that I’ve been seeing klflowers for a while. 😳 I ordered 6 of their smoked wings with a Cajun dry rub and Ranch dressing on the side, Dr. Pepper to drink. The wings didn’t come with fries or anything else, kinda expensive I thought for just 6 wings! Anyway, the wings were delivered to my table about 15-20 minutes later, piping hot! After eating 2 of the Cajun spiced wings with no sauce….these were pretty good I thought, spicy but not too spicy with a good flavor. If anything, I thought they were just a tad overcooked, but still good, even better dipped in the Ranch dressing….which was also pretty good! Don’t know what I was thinking only ordering 6 though, shoulda got the 10 piece. I mean, who the hell only orders 6 wings?! 🙄 Needless to say I was still hungry when I left. Total bill with a soft drink and before tip was $18.17

    WINGS….B+ RANCH DRESSING…A- SCENERY….A+

NEXT STOP WAS BUFFALO WILD WINGS…….
It might be hard to believe but I enjoyed their hamburger I had there recently more than their wings. When I first walked in there was a sign that said to go ahead and seat yourself, which I did……and waited, and waited. After a good 4-5 minutes without a waitress in sight I finally walked up to the front service desk, no one was around and I had to call out for someone through the door! 😡 Some guy comes out and I told him I needed a waitress, he said sure, just a minute. After finally getting a server I ordered their 10 piece wings that came with fries, Dr. Pepper to drink. They had a spicy dry rub called Desert Heat, I ordered 5 wings with that and 5 of their Parmesan Garlic wings. Ranch dressing again for my dipping sauce. I tried one of the Desert Heat wings first, without the dipping sauce. I was hard pressed to find much “Heat” in these wings, or much flavor for that matter….and not much juiciness either. Bland and a little on the dry side were my first thoughts. I was looking forward to trying the Parmesan Garlic wings next…..but again I was left disappointed. They looked really good on my plate, but they also were a little bland to my surprise. Not much Parmesan or garlic taste….just kind of, meh. Dipping em in their “Ranch” dressing didn’t help much either. It tasted a little strange, not like any Ranch dressing I’ve had. While not terrible, the wings definitely had room for improvement. Oh, the fries were pretty good though! You figure a place with Wings in their name would be better than this. Total cost for meal was $14.07 before tip.

    WINGS…C for both varieties Ranch Dressing…C- FRIES….B+ SCENERY….D- [Oops, this ain’t Hooters…sorry]

    ON TO THE WING STOP!
There’s a Wing Stop right around the corner from me and I’ve eaten there a few times before. Thought I’d hit em up today. I ordered their 8 piece wings, 4 of em with their Cajun Rub and 4 of their Original Hot Classic wings and their Ranch dipping sauce…they came with fries and a soft drink. As usual I tried both varieties first without the dipping sauce, didn’t want the Ranch to obscure the taste of the wings. Folks, this wasn’t even a contest! Wing Stop was the clear winner of the 3 places I’ve been so far. EVERYTHING about their wings was better than the other two places. First off, the quality of the chicken itself was better, forget about the spices/sauce/rubs. The wing pieces, both flats and drums, had much more meat on them than the others…..and they were perfectly cooked! Just the right amount of crunch/crust on them and were perfectly moist and tender inside. The Ranch Dressing was also spot on, as well as the hot sauce on them! The fries, meh, they weren’t bad at all, just kind of average tasting, but I didn’t come here for the fries anyway. All’s I can say is….the next three places I visit better get their game on!
Total cost out the door was $15.69 [no tip here, counter service]

Yes sir. They were all fountain drinks mixed out of a machine. No glass bottles of Dr. Pepper made in Texas for sure. But they all tasted ok anyway.

Thanks John. I haven't been to Wing Stop, so I may have to hit them up sometime. It looks like the Hooter's wings were breaded? The other 2 don't look breaded. And did you have a choice of plain or breaded?

The Hooters wings were their Hickory Smoked, with only a dry rub on them, not breaded. They’re not really smoked but say they have a “hickory smoke flavor”. I could actually taste a little smoke on em, they were pretty good! If I’m not mistaken, all of them offered wings either “nekid” or breaded. I didn’t get breaded wings at any of the places.

No scenery rating for wing stop?

I've never been impressed with B Dub's wings. Haven't been there in 12 years, I see they are still unimpressive.

Haven't been to B-dubs in years, but I used to get their... ummm... Habanero Asian something or other... went and looked, there it is - mango habanero. Man, that stuff had some heat. I knew I was eatin' fer sure, when my lips was burnin'. Good stuff. I bought it in a bottle once (after I stopped going there) and it was hot, but wasn't quite the same, I dunno. It's hot stuff, though - although not at the top of their hierarchy. I didn't try anything hotter there.

Hooters has the best breaded wings, for a chain and I love their hot and mild sauces. However I don't particularly like their naked wings much.

Wing Stop is good fresh but not a huge fan of their wings to go or reheated, and their location in our town sucks so good wing street for me means it's gonna have to be reheated. I actually prefer Wing Street even though they are frozen fried wings, but dang their to go trays are awesome with special vents that hold heat but don't trap moisture and even breaded wings don't get soggy to go and reheated are still pretty good.

We usually go to B Dubs, but we're now on our 3rd location as the quality is super dependent on the manager and we now have to drive 40+ minutes for questionable service as the 2 closer ones have trash food and trash staff, which sucks because B Dubs at their best have the best naked wings for a chain IMO. I'm a huge sucker for their dry rub naked wings, that sweet desert heat is my jam. Panhead John they skimped on that rub man, when those things are coated there's a subtle heat maybe kinda like Cholula hot sauce, it's not super spicey even when coated right.

I’ve been to probably 4 different Wing Stops here over the years and they’ve all been consistently good! No drop off in quality between the stores. Best wings I’ve had, period, even better than my own.

I might have to try Wingstop. I'm a sucker for good wings - problem is, there ARE no good wings - that I've found lately. Lately meaning last few years, I don't eat out a lot. Especially at these prices. $18 for 6 wings, fries and a drink at Hooter's? WTF man?

I almost stopped at BWW to try out a burger last week. It was 1650hrs and I was not messing with traffic after laying in a dental chair.

I never feel wings are worth it unless I can get all flats.

You can get all flats if you want em. I think one of the places charged an extra dollar for em.

During the COVID quarantine we had takeout from Buffalow Wild Wings. Four years ago.
They were good then, or not, haven't been back. We enjoyed "Dem Wings".

I need to find a way to do them on my own. I've got a kick ass fryer now for outside cooking (thanks again to my Secret Santa Big Jim White!!!) (did I mention it is TWO HUNDRED THOUSAND BTUs???? lol), so I really am craving some serious wings now.

Man, spring is in the air and I'm craving fried wings and grilled brats!

          God, my belly is rumbling.

I can't remember if or when I've done them. I know I have, I guess, but... it's been a couple-three years prolly. I'm thinking a simple fry and a toss in some Meat Church Holy Voodoo, unless someone has a better choice for a good moderately spicy wing rub. But I gotta find some good THICK and JUICY pieces - I likes 'em like I likes my... ummm.... ladies... parts.

I used to go to BWW all the time. 10-15 years ago maybe, their Parmesan Garlic was so good back then. I think in the last 5 years I’ve had them they’re definitely not the same. Sad.

There’s a wingstop close to us and it seems quite busy for a take out spot so I guess I’m going to have to try it.

I used to go for the TVs during football season. The wings were good, but if I sat in just the right spot in the bar it was football heaven

I went into a Wingstop a few years ago and didn’t notice it was a takeout only place until after I ordered. 🙄 I was a good ways from home and didn’t want to eat in the car so…..I sat on one of the benches they had for people to sit and wait. Spread my food out and chowed down on the bench…😂
