A real estate website has concocted a way to rank BBQ cities. Pretty complex rating system but worth a look see and debate. They rank San Antonio Pitmaster Club and Austin Channels Then, are you seated? San Jose is #3!

Wow. Some real surprises on that list. One is that Milwaukee, WI is even on the list at all. There are a few decent spots in the area but overall to me the bbq scene is seriously lacking. For a city this big, not much to choose from IMO. 🤷â€â™‚ï¸

I think their criteria really gave it a pretty good look over of the subject, impressed. It doesn’t look like much room for a bias. I know Nothing of San Jose, cept O stayed there a week 50 years ago. It looks like they earned their spot. A nice read.Last edited by FireMan; August 16, 2022, 08:40 AM.

Retired, living in Western Mass. Enjoy music, cooking and my family.
Current cookers Weber Spirit 3 burner with a full insert griddle added. A 22" Kettle with vortex, SnS and a Smokey Joe. The most recent addition is a Pit Barrel Jr with bird hanger, 4 hooks and cover. ThermoWorks Smoke 2 probe, DOT, 2 ThermoPops and a Thermapen MK4. A Thermoworks RFX Gateway 2 probe meat thermometer.

and nothing seems subjective.

Not sure I buy it! I live about 30 miles north and I can't say I have ever been to a BBQ restaurant in San Jose. Maybe it's time to get out of the house?Originally posted by Meathead View PostA real estate website has concocted a way to rank BBQ cities. Large Big Green Egg, Weber Performer Deluxe, Weber Smokey Joe Silver, Fireboard Drive, 3 DigiQs, lots of Thermapens, and too much other stuff to mention.
Yelp! Reviews are given too much weight. You get into some god forsaken area where nobody knows what good ‘Q is, or with a lot of tourists ( I’m looking at you, Las Vegas), and just about anything half decent will get 5 stars. Go to Kansas City and you’d better bring your "A" game.
Also, affordability is given too much weight. Good food ain’t cheap, and cheap food ain’t good.

Honestly, they probably are a step up from what some of our parents/grandparents did, but that's a pretty low bar.
If I can nitpick another flaw in the methodology, Major BBQ Events is skewed in favor of southern locals, as these things happen outdoors, and the weather doesn't cooperate for half the year in some of these places, thus, less major events and a lower score.Last edited by Murdy; August 16, 2022, 07:59 AM.

Houston has more BBQ restaurants than any other U.S. city, not per capita, just total….167 in 2021. There are 7 restaurants here that are on Texas Monthly’s top 50 list. Austin has 7 also. Now, I know there’s a lot of other cities outside Texas with stellar BBQ as well. Some of those cities on the list I have no argument with their rankings. But, when they put Houston at number 18, that list has no credibility with me. And San Jose, California number 3!? 🙄 Gimme a #}%^*} break!
I saw what they used as their criteria, who gives a crap if one city is $1.00 more affordable than another? Quality BBQ costs more, period. And I agree with Mosca, yelp ratings were given way more weight than they should. Google searches for BBQ places taken into consideration? The more Google searches the better for your ranking? That’s B.S. We know all the quality places here in Houston, we don’t have to search for them. San Jose? Yeah, everyone’s googling there, because they don’t know where the hell to go.
What I don’t like about a lot of these lists is when they call it "Best Cities In America For BBQ" or like this one….Best BBQ Cities In America. They make it sound like these cities have the most number of top notch BBQ spots in the country. Then they rank them with criteria such as Google searches and affordability, driving distance between each one…..
I wish someone "respectable" would do a survey on U.S. cities ranking them on the NUMBER of stellar and outstanding BBQ restaurants in each city. That’s the only criteria….high quality BBQ. I know one thing, we’d sure as hell be a lot higher than number 18.Last edited by Panhead John; August 15, 2022, 07:16 PM.

I'm not sure that San Jose should be ranked #3 (born and raised there, but I'm 50 miles north now). A large piece of their rating criteria seems to be affordability and given that the medium wage in Silicone Valley is around $150K it makes more sense.
There are a few good BBQ joints in and around San Jose though. Actually the mentioned Smoking Pig place is the one that got me interested in smoking. And now I don't frequent them anymore very often as a result.
But #3, I don't think so!

This is obviously totally rigged. Storm Lake, Iowa isn't even on the list, and it has 5 BBQ restaurants for every 100,000 residents. With no travel time between them. Because the other way to figure it is they have one fantastic restaurant for every 12,000 residents.

Bogy Is that a relatively new place? I sure don't remember seeing it, but then I also have trouble remembering my wife's name.
The most memorable Iowa restaurant for me was in Des Moines. It was a "Benihana type" place, but a locally owned independent place. Great show by chef, plus great food and service.

Pittsburgh and Philadelphia are on the list, at 48 and 46 respectively.
Now, I’m certain you can get good bbq in both of those cities. But I’m also certain that there are 50 cities and towns in, oh, I don’t know… North Carolina? with better bbq. Or Texas, or Kansas, or Tennessee, or Alabama.

Houston probably has 20 "average for us" BBQ joints that should have landed us in the top 5 or at least top 10 in a legitimate survey.Last edited by Panhead John; August 15, 2022, 04:29 PM.

Agreed. I know a place or two in Phila but Potato Discussion seems fair, if not generous.
