Here is Prof Blonder's explanation of the phenomenon:

As hot air rises, cold air rushes in creating a radial inward air current around a fire. Your body partially blocks this current. Like water coursing around a piling, whirlpools form downstream. These vortices sweep around your head, over the fire, and eventually circulate smoke back to your face.

Ha! I was wondering a few days ago when I lit my coals on the weber why the smoke always seems to go to my face! I wonder if it also applies to soldering (smoke always seems to go to my face 🤔🙄😁)
