    Steamed Eggs {Hard Boiled} - Cooking Classy

We have a similar one and like it a lot. For soft boiled egg, you'll just need to experiment with how much water to put in to give you the results you want. For me it's just a tad bit more than the measuring cup calls for.

Cool kitchen gadget. I just started cooking mine at work in the air fryer. Preheat at 170 degrees, put the eggs in for 15 minutes, cold water plunge for 5 minutes and they peel easy peasy.

I have a Hamilton Beach version… Haven’t had the chance to try it yet, but hopefully I can resolve that soon.

I was reading this on Saturday. Got home Saturday evening, and hard cooked eggs were just being peeled. Weird! Cooks Illustrated/ATK convinced me long ago to go with steaming and an immediate dunk in ice water. I don't think I could ever go back. Does the appliance use steam or dry heat?

That looks like a fun contraption to have. I wonder if most folks know that your shells are almost guaranteed to stick if you put the eggs in before bringing the water to a boil. I boil 2 dozen a week for egg salad for my diet and never have a problem with the shells cause I boil the water first and then add the eggs. I'm sure I'm late to add this info but wanted chime in just in case.

And you eat all 2 dozen by yourself in a week? 😱😱😱

                That's championship level egg eating.

I love HB eggs so much that I could probably eat that many too, if I set my mind to it.

Good to know boil water first. 24 eggs a week! Therefore you are the egg man.

fzxdoc and randy.56 LOL I could eat all 24, but I'm not the only egg salad eater in the house. My daughter's steal my egg salad for themselves!

I love my IP for hard boiling eggs. That said, this Dash gizmo looks like fun, especially for soft boiled eggs.

While I generally don't like One Trick Pony kitchen devices, this one seems pretty innocuous.

When I had to set up a new temporary home for us last year (hurricane evacuation) and I didn't have an IP, my daughter convinced me to get a cheapie rice cooker from Amazon. I was doubtful, but honestly it's so much easier to use than firing up my IP. We're not rice experts, so the $20 rice cooker suits our needs perfectly.

I wonder if I'd have a similar experience with this Dash egg cooker.

Thanks, TobyB for the temptation, er, tip.

I agree with your comment about "one trick ponies". I'm generally not fond of them either. But I don't think I'd be too inclined to break out an IP for two to four breakfast boiled eggs. It's a moot point for me, because I don't even own an IP. Space is always an issue though. You've got to be judicious about your purchases least you find yourself in a hoarder's house.

Inspired by TobyB , I purchased the Dash egg cooker (~$20) from Amazon, but sent it back because there was too much plastic in it for my liking (just a personal preference).

Instead, I researched a bit more and found a metal one on Amazon for about $12 more with coupon (about $32).

I used it yesterday for the first time, and am pleased. It was nice to have because I HB'd the eggs while my Instant Pot was busy making steel cut oatmeal.
              1. The yolks were softer than I would like for egg salad, but they made for really good eating right after cooling. I plan to increase the steaming time to 15 min on my next batch.
              2. Peeling the shells was not as easy as on the IP.
              3. The Grade A Large eggs I used did not want to stand up in the little indentations in the tray, but it made no difference. I just let the 6 eggs lie on their sides while they sauna-ed the next 12 minutes away.
              4. It can hold up to 14 eggs.
              5. Cleanup was easy.

The cooker comes with a water measuring cup which has a little prong on the bottom for poking a hole in the eggs, if desired. The instructions said it wasn't necessary to use it, so I didn't.

It was nice to have the eggs going while the toaster was working on the bagels, the IP was serving up the oatmeal, and the coffeemaker was churning out our cuppas. All hands off and didn't need to be minded while those appliances were doing their thing.

This morning I made 2 soft boiled eggs for my husband's breakfast. Again, easy peasy.

I learned that TobyB was right when he said that although a one trick pony, this little cooker allows you to have a quick couple of eggs ready in minutes while you're busy pulling the rest of the breakfast together. My Instant Pot got a bit huffy while the little egg cooker smugly did its thing.

All in all, I'm happy with my purchase. Thanks again, Toby.

And here I am reading this while boiling eggs in a pot on the stove.  Maybe I need to modernize. Thanks for the write-up.

And P.S. the egg cooker I bought can be used for steaming other foods, such as dumplings. It can easily handle a couple of servings of dumplings, since it has 2 cooking levels.
