Huh. A regular sized Vortex fits inside a Smoky Joe. (Pix)

Not perfectly, and not small side up; but this is a useful configuration for a couple burgers, a couple hot dogs, or a couple pieces of chicken! Yes, the lid covers the grate. In fact, I think if you wanted to figure out how to get a charcoal fuse between the bowl and the vortex, you could probably do a small pork butt or chuck roast there.

Might give that try, although even with the smokey joe I usually do a two zone fire..

I did kind of a 1 1/2 zone fire. I saw this when I needed a place to put the vortex while I cleaned the kettle. With the Joe, sometimes I need more charcoal to get the fire closer to the grate, this concentrates the coals. The Joe is for small cooks anyhow. More experimentation is needed, but I like having multiple uses for the tools!

That's a good point about getting coals closer to the grate. Maybe banking the coals to one side of the vortex would be worth a try as well

Yep, if you look closely that’s what I did. I’d use less coals next time, to make it a better split.

Kinda related (not really). I've really enjoyed my new vortex on the PK.

Gave this a shot tonight with some dogs and sausage..
grill grate rests on the vortex which isn't necessarily ideal, but it worked out ok.

Yeah, there’s about 3/4” rise. But the lid fits over top! I’m going to give a shot at ringing briqs around the outside, seeing if it will do a half/small pork butt.

I think that is in the Vorcave position.
