Not perfectly, and not small side up; but this is a useful configuration for a couple burgers, a couple hot dogs, or a couple pieces of chicken! Yes, the lid covers the grate. In fact, I think if you wanted to figure out how to get a charcoal fuse between the bowl and the vortex, you could probably do a small pork butt or chuck roast there.

I did kind of a 1 1/2 zone fire. I saw this when I needed a place to put the vortex while I cleaned the kettle. With the Joe, sometimes I need more charcoal to get the fire closer to the grate, this concentrates the coals. The Joe is for small cooks anyhow. More experimentation is needed, but I like having multiple uses for the tools!
