There's dumb, then there's this client of mine.

Sold a guy a pit smoker last month and last week starts sending me messages that the thermometer is not working correctly.
Bit of back in forth as I was trying to figure out what was wrong.
Sends me another message today that the thermometer is not returning to 0.
He states " You buy a brand new car and the mileage reads 0, this is not returning to 0.
The thermometer functions fine at higher temps, but does not go back to 0.
(We are in Buenos aires and ambient temp is 15-25C here)
What do you tell someone this dumb?

You tell him to send it back because he's too stupid to own a smoker.

Maybe show him that a digital thermometer reads somewhere in the neighborhood? Beyond that, I think JCGrill has the best solution.

Tell him the best you can do is sell him another thermometer.

            1. I'd hope they don't join up here, and see this 2. (I'm gonna throw my wife under the bus here) When we lived in England you could get a half and half loaf, White/Wheat, she had all the bread on the counter and was complaining that there wasn't any white bread in the bag... It took a half hour to explain to her that it was a white/wheat 50/50 mix and not half of each in the bag

I've done just as bad I'm sure, but I won't admit it

Since I'm ragging on the wife, had a push assist mower, she kindly hands me a beer and says she's gonna mow the lawn one day. An hour after enjoying my beer and watching TV I finally look and notice she's only a few passes into it and she's full on leaning into the mower pushing with all her might like someone walking into a windy rain storm in the movies. I go out and show her the handle that makes the wheels move... she hasn't mowed the lawn since, but I did get a shiny riding mower out of that one

ItsAllGoneToTheDogs, my family moved to southern California from the midwest in 1970. The first time I went out to mow the yard with a push reel mower that came with the house. The grass was zoysia. After a half hour I had about 10 feet mowed. My dad came home and asked why the yard wasn't mowed. I told him it was impossible with that mower. With exclamations about lazy kids, he showed me how it was done. With a mighty shove, the reel bit into the turf and the handle almost cut his belly in 2.

Alternatively you could tell him that you are going to have to charge him more if he wants the smoker to be a refrigerator too.

Ok, here’s the solution. PM me and I’ll send you my address. Tell your customer to send me the pit and thermometer and I’ll test it for 10 - 15 years and then let him know if there is a problem with the thermometer or not.

Tell him that is the Altimeter. (or the IQ meter)

This is easily solved. Have him ship the unit to Spinaker and when it doesn’t go to minus 20 this winter, give him/her a refund. I will buy the defective unit from you for 1/2 price because your thermo can’t be trusted!

That's pretty funny. Did he get it when you explained to him why it doesn't go back to zero?

Well he is a customer so you don't want tell him what we all know. So send him a picture from one of your cookers showing the same. Then explain very slowly why. If he doesn't get it after that, tell him to ship the cooker to me.

Ask him if that new car's thermometer resets back to 0. Then ask if it reaches 0* outside if it would then? Maybe he'll realize the grave error in thinking he's making.

When I put the car in reverse for two miles at 25mph why doesn’t the CHP (California Highway Patrol) deduct that from my forward speed? CaptainMike - Jefferson should have that rule.

tbob4 There are no rules in The Great State of Jefferson! A few sensible guidelines and suggestions, but, like taxes, rules are waaaaay overrated!

CaptainMike - I got pulled over for speeding in Fort Stockton, Texas, driving my kid to Two-lane University. After getting off with a very stern warning, I said to my son "you told me there was no speed limit in Texas". He responded "I said West Texas".

What a knucklehead. He doesn't know that it ships with break-in fluid that has to be changed for regular thermometer fluid after the first use?
