    Where to buy probe grommets?

I would like to drill a hole and install a grommet. What are my best options?

Looking at this one for $13.

I Googled 'high temp silicone grommets' and came across this.

    And this.

450 or greater sounds suspect....5000 is greater, doubt they would hold up

Looks like you are on the right track. Any customer reviews? Or contact the sellers and ask. From what I read in descriptions they handle up to 500F heat.

I'm assuming there are many pit members who have done this. Hopefully some of them will chime in then I'll pull the trigger. I have 5 kettles that need a probe port.

That's the Weber WSM grommet and yes it works great on any cooker. You need to buy a step bit for your drill because it requires a 1" hole. They sell those on Amazon as well....

Thanks. I already have one in my cart!

I have the Weber grommet on my 14.5 WSM. It fits in very tightly and works well.

Attjack I honestly don't know. Since I haven't used any of those cheaper grommets, I have no frame of reference. I would buy one Weber grommet and one cheaper grommet for 2 of your kettles. After you've tried both out you'll know whether or not the extra cost is worth it for your remaining 3 kettles.

I've put the WSM grommet (the one pictured in Attjack's initial post) on both my Weber 22" and 26". They work great! They required a 1 1/4" hole.

While not as sexy a solution, I just use a twisted piece of tin foil to fill hole gap when with or without a probe installed. I drilled a smaller hole, sanded off sharp edges w Dremel, and feed multiple wires in one probe at a time upon use, then plug remaining gap w small piece of foil. .

I don't know about the other smaller grommets above, it's good they are silicon, but remember you may want to put multiple probes into your cooker(s). I generally stuff the small connector plug end through the wide grommet slit, you can easily get 3-4 each through there. The slit then pretty much seals up the opening, its flexible and somewhat thin.

On the grommet above Dimension C will have to be at least 1/4" if not 3/8" to accommodate multiple probes. That leaves somewhat of a large aperture where smoke and heat can escape. That in and of itself may be minor however, the size itself should be looked at for easy of use. I don't know if you have a Graingers by you but try to get your hands on one and run your probe ends through it.

I highly recommend the WSM grommet, they obviously did their homework when they designed it. Price, as you say, may be a factor so going with the standard grommet may work better for your needs, at least monetarily.

Here's my WSM probe port with three probe wires. I could easily get 2 more, maybe even a third if push came to shove. Not that it's needed in such a small cooker.

Well maybe I'll get the WSM grommet for my 26" and roll the dice on a pack of cheaper ones then start with installing one on my Smokey Joe. Then I can decide if I want to install the cheap ones on the rest, or if I want to spring for more of the premium ones.

Okay one step drill bit, one WSM grommet, and two Maverick grommets are now on order. Thanks for the input, everyone.

Looks nice. It's the most expensive option so far.

Those type of cable glands have interior parts that are plastic and rubber (some have a neoprene type of rubber) that will hold up for use in a smoker but if used on a grill where one may be doing higher heat cooks may run into longevity problems.

          That’s the one I have 🙄 actually I have 4 of them.

What kind of probes are you using with that one, looks like a small opening? Do FireBoard or Smoke probes go through there? Something must they show three wires.

Yea one thing about the stainless one is it looks like it's built to last (except for maybe the plastic piece). The silicone grommets definitely have a finite life span.

Made mine using a threaded lamp nipple and corresponding nuts and caps.

I've installed three Weber grommets, one on 22 Kettle, two on my drum. My WSM 14.5 also has one. I have no problems with them yet but its only been a few months on the ones I installed. The WSM I've had for a year. They seal really well with the probes in them. One thing to keep in mind is that it you should use two hands to push/pull the Smoke probes through the grommet. It's just to much strain on the cables IMHO to do it one handed. I can't speak to the other solutions but I am happy with the grommets. $13 sounds steep for one unless that includes shipping. I swear I got three of them online for $4 a piece. I just can't remember where I got them.

Here's a link to installing the grommet on the kettle. https://pitmaster.amazingribs.com/fo...-22#post420627
