Rec Tec 680
Weber Performer
Weber Rotisserie for kettle
Weber Summit
My old worn out Gasser for burgers
I received my Smoke thermometer last week, used it on a brisket cook Sunday. It worked great! changing the alarm settings after wrapping was very easy, for that alone it's my new favorite. The range seemed a little better than the maverick, just a little but did not drop connection during the cook like the maverick does.

Got a box full of mavericks, others, the all worked pretty well, and the Meater , well, it's nowhere to be found. Just playing around with this thing it looks like it's going to be my favorite.

I just got an email from Thermoworks. Apparently I have to wait awhile longer as the smoke has not yet passed whatever radio testing that it needs to in order to come to Canada... guh......

You two must have stringent radio stipulations in your homelands, unlike us, lol kingdarb Sydney Simon But seriously, keep us posted how long it takes to receive them.

Finally received it! Well it did arrive a few weeks ago but I was overseas. Oh and what do we have in the fridge, a pork shoulder waiting to be cooked! 😄

Mine arrived earlier in the week and I have it setup to simply monitor grill temps during my rib cook. A couple quick comments.
1. The Thermoworks product is extremely well made. Quality materials and it feels like a substantial well made product.
2. Wireless range is incredible. We live in a brick house and my office is on the other side of the house from my smokers. No problems monitoring the temps thru the brick and multiple walls. My Mavericks cannot reach my back office.
3. The Smoke takes a while to get up to pit temp, while the Maverick can settle in within 5-10 seconds. Not a bit deal, mind you, but just a quick observation.

Using mine for the first time today. Cold, rainy, and windy here so I'm having a hard time keeping the Traeger in 225-250 range. I grabbed the insulating blanket from the barn and it seems to help. So far, the Smoke seems to be working well, although I'm interested to see how it performs under better weather conditions. The next cook will be on the Weber.

First off, I am a big fan of Thermoworks products. I have a Thermapen Mk4 and a ChefAlarm. I bought the first Smoke a few weeks ago and gave it to my son for his birthday. I immediately ordered a second one for me.
I am using it as I type, cooking a Pork shoulder on my Traeger.
Here are the pros:
very easy to set and use, as opposed to my Maverick which requires reading the instructions every time to set.
Probes are like all Thermoworks probes very well constructed, and the 4 foot length is much better.
Temperature response times are very fast.
Both units are well constructed and sturdy. Magnets on the back of the sending unit are really handy for attaching to my pellet hopper.
Cons: very, very disappointed with the range. My grill is on my garage parking pad on the side of my house.I am on my back porch which is approximately 65 feet from my grill. There are two wood walls with windows separating me from the grill. The receiver constantly loses connection, absolutely will not work on my back porch. Consequently, my receiver is on my patio table which is 25 feet from my back porch. So in order to check the temperatures, i have to go outside and walk to the patio table. With my grill in the same place, my Maverick never loses connections when the receiver is on my porch. I would recommend that anyone contemplating this unit consider very carefully where they are going to be in relationship to their grill.
In conclusion, had I known that they were coming out with a wifi version, I would have passed on this one and waited for the wifi version.

There is not going to be a WiFi version of the Smoke itself. There is an accessory unit (gateway) that will allow your existing Smoke to connect to your WiFi router. They say that will be available next year for $89. You can add that then if you wish.Last edited by Histrix; November 12, 2016, 07:03 PM.

Thanks Histrix. Aside from the range I really like the smoke. Actually this morning I figured out where I can place my grill which will give me a better line of site to my back porch. If that doesn't work well, then the wifi gateway will hopefully be the answer.

It sucks! My office is 30 feet from the backyard, with a single wall separating them. The remote won't work in my office, 25 feet away, which means that I have to leave it in the kitchen, where I can actually see and read the Smoke. Defeats the purpose of the remote unit! Very disappointing.

Reese Bobby from "Talladega Nights": "Oh hell, Son, I was high that day. That doesn't make any sense at all, you can be second, third, fourth... hell you can even be fifth." Translation -- you do your best, that's what matters!
Using a medium Green Egg, and yes, I have a Thermapen!

I just like the concept of Meater with a wireless probe that measures both meat temp and smoker temp. You would think Thermoworks would be the lead on that by now since Meater first was announced on Kickstarter. I mean, they have to be aware of it.
-
https://github.com/CapnBry/HeaterMet...---HeaterMeter read the LinkMeter Remote (LMR) section. I think Meaters problem is the engineer aspect to deal with the heat, the wireless technology is there.

Halfway through 2017, still not the slightest hint of the WiFi gateway making an appearance. Called Thermoworks but got the standard "still in development, we want you to have a great product..." I'm starting to have second thoughts about getting the Smoke in the first place. Based on past experience, never believe the "will be released shortly" line from any tech company.
Does anyone have any crumb of hope to offer me, or do I start looking at Fireboards?

REC TEC RT-300 Mini
GrillGrates
ThermoWorks Smoke
ThermoWorks ThermoPop
Weber gasser circa 2002ish
- 3 burners going the wrong way
- rusty sear bars & guaranteed sticky grates
- Why oh why won't it just get off my porch?
BOC: Summit Winter Ale (the only reason to have winter)
- otherwise gimme a cold Coors Banquet
Porterdriver I know what your saying about potential empty promises but I tend to believe they are close. My main reason is they have released the ThermaQ Blue and ThermaQ WiFi and it appears they are in stock and delivering. My optimism is based on the fact that they now have Bluetooth, Wifi, and making an app for mobile devices figured out. Those are huge engineering steps which should get them a long way into the design of the Smoke Gateway. I love my Smoke and can't wait for the Gateway. Fireboards are way cool but I couldn't justify it for my own cooking needs but to each his/her own. I hope they don't make me look foolish here...
