Hi, my name is Darrell. I'm an OTR truck driver for over 25 years. During my off time I love doing backyard cooks. I have a 48" Lang Deluxe smoker, Rec-Tec pellet smoker,1 Weber Genesis 330, 1 Weber Performer (blue), 2 Weber kettles (1 black and 1 Copper), 1 26" Weber kettle, a WSM, 8 Maverick Redi Chek thermometers, a PartyQ, 2 SnS, Grill Grates, Cast Iron grates, 1 ThermoPop (orange) and 2 ThermoPens (pink and orange) and planning on adding more cooking accessories. Now I have an Anova sous vide, the Dragon blower and 2 Chef alarms from Thermoworks.
I plan on pre-ordering also. It looks like in the initial production run, gray is the only color available. No biggie. I'll be a happy camper if the display is good as it looks. It resembles the Chef Alarm which has excellent visibility. That's my biggest complaint against my Mavericks (Hard to see the readout in certain light conditions). One caveat for someone who isn't familiar with the ThermoWorks Pro probes, they might not fit through your existing probe port. They have an enlarged bulb on the probe end that needs a larger opening than most probes. I'm sure they were designed that way for longer life. All in all, looks like a winner!
I notice this line from the review: "The receiver works on radio frequency (RF), not Bluetooth."
Whoa...so it uses radio waves?!?!
The Smoke uses the 2.4ghz band. The same frequency used by Bluetooth, WiFi, and lots of other gizmos. I have no idea if the Smoke is using the Bluetooth protocol (and just not stating that) or some other transmit/receive protocol. However, since it is operating in the 2.4ghz band it will likely have similar issues with range. The range of these devices in this frequency range really depends on what the signal has to pass thru - how many walls, what construction materials, whatever other "stuff" is in the path of the signal. It really remains to be seen if this device will really prove to be any better range-wise. Some folks have few problems with the range of some Bluetooth devices while others can't seem to go 30 feet without issues.
Will be interesting to see some real world reports once these ship.
I would put money if you took the Therm Duo and Therm Smoke and put them side by side and walked away with receivers you would lose signal on the Duo before the smoke. Range capabilities never seem close.

Scotch: Current favorite- The Arran (anything by them), Glenmorangie 12yr Lasanta, sherry cask finished. The Balvenie Double Wood, also like Oban 18yr, and The Glenlivet Nadurra (Oloroso sherry cask finished) among others. Neat please.

I'm worried about its claim of "water resistant" for $99. Did I miss something? I need to operate a waterproof transmitter. My Mavericks held up like champs yesterday in the pouring. rain. all. day.

Very few manufacturers would claim their product is totally waterproof due, I assume, to some sort of liability issue. What Thermoworks claims for the Smoke is: "Water Resistant: Molded-in seals for splashproof protection, safe for outdoor use." ... so I wouldn't submerge it. I wonder if rain qualifies as splashing? Might want to ask them ...
I think you're right. Waterproof probably implies you can take it in your pool with you. I wouldn't put it in a bowl of water of course, but standing up to being out in a driving rain for 12-14hrs might qualify as "splash proof".
Huskee - yeah. I mean, heck I've got a fairly high end diver's watch that is said to be only "water resistant" to a depth of 300 meters/ 1000 feet. How's that for covering their Swiss-made hindquarters? ... ...
Nothing is water proof except maybe really well built submarines. I kind of regret my Maverick purchases now. In my experience with the thermopen Thermoworks makes well made products.

Look up the IP rating. The first number is dust, the second is water.
