My thermopen classic decided to kick the bucket tonight. It apparently had water inside it and the batteries were pretty rusted!

It's likely the batteries leaked. I use Energizer Max batteries in all my electronics. They are guaranteed not to leak and Energizer will replace the item if it does.

Keep us posted on this one. I would love to know if they replace a Thermopen.

They leaked, but there was also visible water drops on top of the batteries, so it was a bigger problem than just the batteries.

I bought a Thermopen One after we gave our Thermopop to my stepson. I took one for the team :-) If the Thermopop 2 had existed at the time, I may have gone for it. It looks really impressive for the price.

The Thermopop works fine but is not near as sturdy as the Thermapen One. The Thermapen One will survive many drops, water splash, rinsing and being left outside in the rain. They are built for the long haul.

I've got a Thermapen Classic, still going strong. A Thermapen One is waiting in the wings, still in the box. Also, what briano52 said, having a Thermapop as a back up is a great idea. I have one also, it's my indoor cooking temp checker, and whenever a niece or nephew moves out on their own, (or when my kids did), and needed housewarming gifts, they got a Thermapop and a meat temperature guide magnet for the fridge.

Welp, the story has taken some fun turns. First, one of the kind folks here has sent me his old and somewhat worn Thermapen classic to get me through for a bit (Thank You!). He confirmed that he sent it my way yesterday morning.

Last night as I was doing dishes, I decided to open up my dead one for the second evening in a row just to see what happens…and it turned on! I guess it needed to dry out for a couple of days before it decided to work again. The battery compartment lid will not stay on, so I may Frankenstein the two units once the other one arrives, and just run each one in turn as they hobble through their last hurras before actually giving up the ghost.

I think the last closeout price email of $61 on the Thermopen One was a week or two back - they were closing out different colors, and sale ended when that color sold out.

I have a Thermopen One, a few years old, and a Thermopen Classic, serviced once, that is at least 10 years old.

Recently I thought the ThermoPen One was shot, as I would open it, and display didn't come on. I changed batteries, still it was acting weird, and I resorted to my older Classic for the next 6 months. I finally realized that the One has a "motion" sensor and gave it a little smack and it woke up! For some reason, I have to give it a little tap to wake it up from time to time, but at least it is working.

I've bought a number of Thermopop's for people as gifts, and they are great thermometers too if you do not need the speed of the Thermopen One.

My first Thermoworks product was a RT600C pocket thermometer for $19 in 2012, and that one still works, is accurate, but slow with a small display.

Uncle Bob Yes, and I’m curious to know what that is. Not a whisper of it anywhere…including over at ETI (the actual manufacturer of the Thermapen.)

I know there are great inexpensive instant read thermometers all over Amazon. Technology is improving and it's easier to make better things cheaper and many of them work great and are great, especially for the money... but I trust the folks at Thermoworks, and I trust the Thermapen so that's what I use. You have peace of mind knowing there's a company full of great people behind those products who are there to help you when needed.

Hands down I’d get the Thermapen One. I have several, and just gifted another one. They are THE gold standard for handheld thermometers.

I still have a handful of Mk 4 Thermapens which are also great. My Thermapens prior to the Mk 4 were all given away years ago and still going strong.

ThermoWorks has proven once again that their customer service is amazing! I let them know that my Classic started working and needs a replacement battery cover. I offered to pay for it and they said they just send those out for free! Now I will have a classic with some internal rusting, thus no idea of how long it will last and an MK4 given to me with some damage, but functional, so I’ll get through for a while before I need to make another purchase decision. I’ll probably stick with ThermoWorks based on their customer service.
