RIP Theromopen

My thermopen classic decided to kick the bucket tonight. It apparently had water inside it and the batteries were pretty rusted!

It lasted almost 6 years, with one warranty replacement about a year in.

I had a panic moment because I had chicken legs on my grill and didn’t know how to temp them. My wife thought I was joking and I quickly realized that I had way too many leave in thermometers to not have some way of figuring out the internal temp! Glad she was thinking better than me in the moment.

I now need to decide if I want to go with the expensive route and get a Thermopen One, which claims to be waterproof, or go for a cheaper alternative such as a Thermopro product. What recommendations do y’all have for my MCS thermometer version?

They've been discontinuing certain colors of the One , pricing them at $61 , IIRC . I picked up another yellow one last month.

from an instant read, thermoworks is pretty dialed in with speed, and I trust their accuracy. They always have sales.

I've had my cheap Amazon units for over 10 years use them all the time, no issues. Kids got me on Amazon a wireless probe, no name brand. I can do a rotisserie chicken in the Yoder, 10 Ga steel. I can get temp readings anywhere in or around the house. Works great, 4 years old now. Just saying, maybe you don't have to spend a lot if you don't want to.

Thermopen One. I had the display go bad on one of mine a short while back, and they replaced it no charge, no questions asked. Their warranty and customer service are top notch. And I agree with Skip , they frequently have sales with considerable price reductions, and will likely have one for Labor Day if you can hold off for a few more weeks.

I have many Thermoworks products and they all are top notch and last forever. My first Thermapen is over 10 old and is still going strong. Whenever I have needed help with one their products, they immediately respond to phone calls and email. I have broken pieces (stands) off two items that were years out of warranty. Asked if I could just buy the part I needed. Both time they sent the part for free and no questions asked.

I frequently give Thermapens as gifts. People love them. They have sales

I just had a similar situation. I bought a Thermo Pop...Just as good...About $35.00 bucks.

If you aren't already, get on Thermoworks email list. You'll know when the next color of One gets discontinued for $61.

I emailed their customer service just to see what they would say. Their AI responded and offered me a One for $74. It has a 5 year warranty vs the 2 year warranty of the older version. Definitely tempted to just go that way. I’ve always been a ThermoWorks apologist, so it’s definitely out of character for me to be considering going another direction.

I have a working original Thermapen classic. Probably 20+ years old? I have several Thermapens and have given maybe 10+ as gifts. As far as I know, they are all working great and several have survived water submersion. I really don't think there is a better instant read thermometer probe out there.

Nothing wrong with the Thermapen. I'd also maybe throw in the Fireboard Sparq. I'm a Fireboard lover from way back, and their Sparq instant read is pretty good. I like it. But I also love my Thermapen One.

I have a spark as well, I am jealous of your experience with it, mine has been really disappointing other than being a hub for reading my main units, that I have enjoyed.

Whatever you decide to buy, make it fit your budget. If waiting to afford it is necessary, do so. This isn’t a good time to add credit card debt.

For a millisecond I was dreading Thermoworks going under... stupid MAK has me all hyper sensitive to that sorta news

I've really like the One, so much so that every time they are on sale I buy one for friends and family. The only downside is for a magnet you have to buy the cover, but those are also usually on sale at the same time as the One.

Over the last 4 to 6 weeks, they've been teasing them out one color at a time for $61 . IIRC , they've done yellow, purple, green, and maybe another one.

They said it was an inventory closeout, so they may be done , IDK .

I just rechecked , I paid $74 but somehow, I got a 10% discount off that price, brought it down to $67. And it was at the end of April ............ time gets away from me.
