Fireboard users - do you name your channels each cook?

I love the ability of the Fireboard software to name each channel something different each time you fire up the pit.

I just happened to notice this on Richard Chrz's 'First Day of Summer Cook', that he didn't name his probes/channels and I wondered what others do. Seems like most of the pics I've seen posted, people do name them, but maybe my perception is off, I dunno.

Do you name them sometimes and others just can't be bothered? Do you never ever name them and just go by "Channel 1" and "Channel 2", etc.?

I name every channel most every cook. Sometimes, very rarely, like when putting probes in brats I'm going to be smoking for only 20 minutes or something, I might skip the naming, but not often.

I dunno, maybe I'm just weird. I like having them named, and it really makes more of a difference in the archive, going back to look at old cooks and wondering what was what.

    Anyways, I was just curious.

I don’t. But I don’t save them and look at them later, either. If I did, then knowing what was cooking and on what cooker would be good info.

I name the channels and the cook as well. It is nice to have the digital notebook to look back on for reference.

I also have a list that I post in my cooks every time so I can have additional information. I have used this list more than once for weather conditions, rubs, cooker info etc....

        It's a window into insanity. :/ @dji

I’m too lazy to name channels, if I were more organized in life, I would probably do more like what Spinaker does. Someday I hope to take notes, and be organized, but I doubt it will happen.

Chaos is life. Or the other way around. Whatever.

Yesterday was the first time I actually name a cook. I didn’t realize you could do the channel as well. But now that I know you say that, it would help me remember where each probe is rather than placing the wire in a certain area to remember

I’m with you in naming each channel every time. I rarely smoke just one item. If I’m cooking something there is going to be at least two of them in the chamber and often more. It really helps me when rotating chunks of similar looking meat as I usually follow a rotation pattern so I can easily remember what I last did several hours ago.

I have two probes that pretty much live in my smoker. One is a short probe, and the other is a longer 90° probe. The got named Tenderloin and Ribeye for one of my first cooks years ago, and have had those names ever since. I don't know if they suffer any trauma because I mis-identify them for non-steak cooks, but so far they haven't complained.

I name them so I know what the session was for. Espcially if cooking two different meats. When doing a brisket, I label Point and Flat.

Now I might just do that one. But regardless, I’ve done my best briskets by concentrating only on the flat.

I concentrate on the flat also. But this allows me to monitor both. If one if a lot higher in temp than the other, I make sure to turn it so the lower temp piece is facing the direction the heat is coming from. Not a big deal, just another tool to manage the cook.

I'm just too lazy, but if I wuz gonna name them, it would probably be Bonnie and Clyde or Salt and Peppa.

So what do you/would you name yours?

Bob and Ray? Abbot and Costello? Stiller and Meara? Keye and Peele? Something that fits my aptitude for this stuff.

I name if using more that one probe so I know where it is, like chicken thigh, chicken breast, and then if more that one cut of meat. If I am only running one probe I don't bother as I know where it is.

Honestly I rarely if ever fully utilize the features of my fireboard. If I'm testing something I will name probes for the duration of the test so I don't get mixed up, but day to day I know my center probe is my ambient and the 2 outside probes are for proteins (I have the Pro K probe version which only has 3 probe ports and then a pulse which shows up differently anyway)

I don't have the Fireboard, but the RFX has that feature and I change the names every time.

I never name mine. I can see how naming would be helpful for looking at past cooks, however, that would require more commitment to an electronic device. I usually just know where the probes are during the cook and just keep mental notes. This naming thing could be cool.

I change the name as needed.Usually after everythin Is up and running! And on my phone.

I would never get as detailed as Spinaker, adding weather info (namely temp and wind) is good idea.

To the surprise of absolutely nobody, I'm sure, I always label everything in every Fireboard session. Those session logs have pretty much replaced my pen & paper notebook and I now use them as my permanent records.

I find the easiest place to do those edits is on a computer web browser rather than the phone app. Here is the session I am running at this very moment, stabilizing my kettle temp before I put a chuckie on there.

That button in the upper right "Matrix view" is where you can edit the individual channel names by clicking the little gear icon next to each one (not in the view above). But confusingly, the "edit session" link on the graph page lets you edit only the session title and a summary blurb. Would be more intuitive if all editing was done on a single view.

Yeah, I have a template that I paste in every time then I fill in all of my information. It is really nice being able to go back and check on past cooks.
