What's The Funnest (Or Strangest?) Thing You Use Your Instant Read Thermometer For?

    • I use my Thermapen for temp'ing my morning coffee, just to see what temp I prefer when it's right where I like it. I learned that I like anywhere from 125-140, I can tolerate 155 but don't prefer it or higher. My ideal temp is about 130.
    • A few times I've taken it to Lake Michigan in Ludington, swimming. Two summers ago we hit 82* at waist-high range. That's pretty good for a giant northern lake that is cold ~7-8 months of the year.
    • I've tested my water heater's temp, my furthest sink comes out at 112*, hot-ish but not painful hot.
    • I've tested my jet tub, don't rememebr but prob a touch less than 112* given the previous point
    • I've tested my beer to see if my fridge was accurate (I don't remember the results, sorry. Better go get another beer...)
    • I've tested my floor vents to see how cold my AC air is. I wanna say it was about 50-52* sticking it in as far as I could reach.
    • I've tested the air on what was my coldest day starting up the smoker for pulled beef (-22*F, burr!)
    • Y'all have reminded me that I've checked under my tongue for fevers a few times too
I can't rememebr any others (besides the obvious meat and such).

    What about you?

      > I use it weekly at the sauna to record the spring water temp before we jump in.
      > I use it all the time when we are making maple syrup. You have to nail the temp at certain times during the process, so monitoring the sap temp is key.
      >I will open it and wave it from time to time to see what the temp the house is.
      >I have used it to see if I have a fever.
      >I have also used it in Lake Superior when I am swimming, just because I find it interesting during my cold plunges.

I forgot I use it for air temp when camping too. Sometimes outside when I'm cooking if it's a bad cold winter day. (added).

Depending on just how you used it to check yourself for fever, I think I’ll pass on any meat you temped with it after that.

You might want to reconsider this phrasing..." I wanna say it was about 50-52* sticking it in as far as I could reach."

      • temped my water prior to adding yeast for bread baking
      • Temped me (under my tongue) when “C” started in 2020
      • temped mail order product when dry ice was evaporated (took two packages and placed the probe between them)
      • I once placed the combustion probe in a sweet potato so I could monitor the ambient temp of KJJr

SheilaAnn Curious: how did the sweet potato trick with the CI probe go?

It just held the probe in place. I didn’t want to rest the probe directly on the grates. Worked like a charm! I can’t remember what the cook was. Or maybe I was just testing for a future project……

It does make a good defacto cat toy.....and the battery lasts longer than those watch batteries in traditional cat toys!

I use it to check the tap water temp in the kitchen: 120°. And once I used it when I couldn’t find a thermometer and I had a fever.

Corn dogs and Taquitoes since I want 160. Hot water out the faucet to set hot water heater. Cold water when there is a freeze.

This is enlightening. I have only used it to temp meat. So many new ideas, so little time. 😆

Used the one at my coffee shop job to prove that it was so hot we needed to close yet store due to a broken AC in the summer.

Never thought of using it to check for fevers! We are always frustrated with the inaccurate ones we have. Never need to be frustrated again!

          Adjust hot water heater.
          Water temp for baking bread.
          Food temp especially fish.
Almost took it to the river but found my thermometer. I should probably have one for that instead of waiting for the bulb thermo.
Pack it in suitcase when we rent a vacation property.
Keep one in the camper too.

Slightly off topic and only slightly joking….. how about a doctor’s Nexus Letter for the VA? Every doctor that I talk to clams up tighter than a lump of coal trying to turn into a diamond when I ask if they would even consider THINKING about conducting a fair assessment and PERHAPS writing a nexus letter if they even potentially thought my neck issues were potentially service connected.

            • Check the water temperature in the ice water-filled cooler when thawing a frozen turkey breast.
            • Wave it in the air to test the accuracy of our thermostat in the house.
            • Have occasionally used it to flip something small (chicken tenderloin) on the griddle when I checked the IT and it wasn't quite done yet.
