She told me she received it as a wedding gift. There is no writing or markings on it besides the 8 on the lid

Could be an old witch's cauldron ... no offense to your mom. Nice score!

Very nice. I bet Spinaker will chime in and probably knows what it is.

That is so cool ssandy_561. By the looks of it, I’m sorta guessing that might be from someone in your mom’s past, as in antique. Real great looking piece.

Well I'll be darned I have the same one or very similar. Hammered cast iron has such a cool and unique look. I can't remember where the heck I got it but I've had it for a long time. I think it's a chicken fryer. I put cheesy potatoes or other casseroles in it on the smoker.

I am pretty sure that is a Chicago Foundry Dutch oven. Probably circa 1930’s. The hammered lid is a good sign. I’ll be able to tell you for sure, once I get home.

Photo gallery link on bottom of page, pattern most resembles Chicago Hardware Foundry, as Spinaker said, previous...

Google also had lotsa images in response to Chicago Hardware Foundry Hammered Cast Iron

Thanks for the link Mr. Bones I bookmarked it. The first pic in the gallery certainly looks like my piece.
