Breadhead - ain't that the truth. I saw the $100 dollar price tag and saw what I spent on my Lodge .. it can't be better or for that fact, that much better than a Lodge. Like my dad would say 'Not my $100 dollars' ... lol
I agree SoCalTim ... I don't see that skillet being worth 5 times more than my larger Lodge skillet. I'm not a player on this lightweight skillet at $100. If their price was twice as much as my Lodge skillet... maybe.
SoCalTim ... the guy that bought an SnS that didn't own a kettle was me...😡 I bought a 26" Weber kettle to have something to use my SnS on.🙈 The SnS was $99 and the 26" kettle was $349. Dave picked my pocket on that one.😆
You got me Dave... and I'm glad you did. I hadn't ever owned a kettle before. I like having both a Kamado and the kettle... then there's my 4 burner gasser.
FYI, not an Anova owner, or customer....
Followed th' link, ordered, paid with Paypal, received order confirmation....
Unless/Until somebody tells me "NO!!!", apparently this is not just for Anova owners....
I would have gotten one of these, after awhile anyway... I like what they are makin', an' how they roll...
Skippin' th' waitin' list is good with me; I can be a "Field Tester"
Reckon I have th' Quals fer that Position!
Mr. Bones
I hope you get one of these puppies. And I love the fact that you might even though you may not be part of their "exclusive community". Kudos to you my brother.
And I ain't sayn a damn thing no way,no how
Peace out.

We will have to find out on Thursday. To the "I can just buy a $20 Lodge" crowd, probably not. But they have been sanded smooth, the casting looks gorgeous and they are made in the USA. To me that is worth something. But I will let you know! Looking forward to it. Thunder77

Breadhead @SoCalTim
"I don't get it? This skillet is 10.25" VS my Lodge skillet that is 12". This skillet weighs about 1/2 as much as my Lodge skillet which weighs 9.345 lbs, but they want 5 times more than my Lodge sells for today on Amazon... $19.95. Fill me in, why is this skillet worth 5x's as much?"
For these skillets, weight is just what they are after, or lack there of. One of the reasons people went to steel cookware was that cast iron pieces were so heavy. Especially when loaded with food. And most of them were being handled by women, and they wanted lighter, more manageable cookware. The old vintage pans were much thiner and lighter than casting done in the 60's to today. Lodge makes a great product, but they are heavy. Most people don't want to deal with such a heavy piece of cookware.
Another problem with modern cast iron cookware is the cooking surface. Pre 1960's almost all skillets were sanded and polished smooth, making them very easy to season to non-stick. While the modern skillets need MUCH more work to become non-stick.
Field Company Skillets were designed to solve these problems. The skillets are lighter by design. They are designed to be taken on camping trips and used daily by those that don't care for horsing heavy skillets around.
They are also sanded smooth. This was dropped by Lodge so they could keep their production costs low enough to stay in business or not have to send production over seas. Sanding and milling the skillets down takes time and labor. Which is expensive. The Field Company are also pre seasoning the skillets with flax oil, in small batches. Which is also expensive.
Lodge is a massive foundry that is kicking out tons of castings everyday. Most of their process is automated and they are able to cast a boat load of skillets each time. The companies that have tried to compete with Lodge end up having to send all of their castings over seas , to the detriment of quality. (Think Camp Chef and Bayou Classic,) Field company actually was going to do this originally. But they received a lot of negative feedback and have since kept it in the US. (Although their 12" might still be planned for Chinese casting.)
I think we can all agree on the fact that certain cookware or cookers are more "worth it" to some than others. To people who enjoy cooking with cast iron, collectors or people who are just looking for a lighter, more easily seasoned pan will find Field Company skillets to be worth every penny. My self included.
Thank you i actually do get it now. They go above & beyond. My mom left me her CI Skillet, it was passed to her from her Mom & her mom before. It is so perfectly worn, the only way to get it this perfect would be 70 years of constant use (who has 70 years?) or I guess buy a Fields. Tim
According to the website "We’ve incorporated modern machining techniques to achieve an incredibly smooth surface." I'm assuming that means these pans have been given a treatment by a mill aka machined. Which would explain the smoothness and also the cost.
Does a Field skillet perform better than pretty much any other skillet available for a fraction of the price such as a newly made Lodge? Not really. The smooth surfaces of a Field feel nice but any Lodge will also develop a smooth surface after it has been sufficiently used.
Are there perhaps aesthetic factors that make a Field skillet more appealing? Perhaps. Personally, I do like the outward leaning flare of the sidewalls of the Field.
Is the lighter weight of a Field skillet important? To some folks perhaps. It's kinda funny tho that despite their touting the light weight of their skillet their design does still incorporate a small "helper handle".
The Field is a nice skillet. I got mine via their Kickstarter campaign last year for $85. Of the three skillets I have gotten via Kickstarter in the past year or so I'd rank the Field in 2nd place. First place goes to the Stargazer and third place goes to the Finex.
Are any of these skillets worth the price premium over a Lodge? That's a decision that depends upon a person's own matrix of how they weight the various aspects involved.
Bingo! Obviously my matrix is different than all those that pulled the trigger on this lightweight skillet.👍 I would really like to have one but not for a whole Benjamin.😡
Scotch: Current favorite- The Arran (anything by them), Glenmorangie 12yr Lasanta, sherry cask finished. The Balvenie Double Wood, also like Oban 18yr, and The Glenlivet Nadurra (Oloroso sherry cask finished) among others. Neat please.

I was about to ask why on earth this excites everyone, a $100 skillet. I thought I was missing some great big obvious thing somewhere....but I get that this is the "Wagyu" of CI skillets. This clears it up nicely. (But still, I'll pass).
I would think the lighter weight would be nice to use indoors especially on the glass top stoves which I always worry about cracking with heavier CI. Still pricey though, and won't ship to Canada yet.
