I got the lid for the dutch oven done this morning. I would say it looks great. We can consider this one fully restored. This dutch oven was a piece that a friend of mine and his father (now gone) used on their Boy Scout trips growing up. So this one was a special restoration for me, but more importantly for him. We can now use this piece once again, the way it was intended, and I think his father would be proud of that.

Thanks! It was a fun one. It is amazing how these things come back to life. It is one of the joys of collecting and restoring cast iron. @jrmorris

Also, going on today was my Griswold No. 10, I pulled it out of the E-Bath and we have it pretty much all stripped down. There is a little seasoning left on it, but that is no big deal. All the rust and carbon has been removed.

This is the pan after one round of Flax oil seasoning. She really has a nice sheen. I let it cool over night, and I will probably do another round of seasoning later today. So far, so good!

These pics are so great! After reading this thread I have changed my CI maintenance because i have better understanding of how the seasoning works and why i don't want any left over residue from my cooking oils which all have a high smoke point. Thank you Spinaker for helping spread this knowledge!! 🔥🔥🔥🙏🏻❤️🐿

Here are the final pics of the Griswold! It came out great!

Wait until you see what I am working on next........a small Japanese Konro Hibachi Grill.

I found it outside of my buddies barn, laying in the weeds. I have no clue how old it is or how long it has been there. It was half buried in the dirt and full of years of rats nests.

The grate, fire grate, and body were all present. That in itself is a miracle. I will have to turn new wooden handles as they were totally rotted off the unit. I might also need to put new wooden feet on it as well, just to make it a full restoration. I do not plan on using it for anything other than a cool display for my buddies office at his farm.

I have the grate in the bath right now. And it is going well! I can see bare metal already, which is, honestly, incredible.

        Awesome

Here is the grate that is fresh out of the Electrolysis bath. There is significant pitting from being left in the elements. There is not much you can do about that unless I chose to sandblast the grate until smooth. For this piece, I am simply try to restore it to its former look. The pitting will give it character on the shelf. Either way, it really is amazing how this metal can come back after being totally caked in rust after all these years.

So far so good. I am moving onto the body of the grill today. I am going to load the grilling my Pit Barrel Cooker and run it with the rods out to get the temp up high. I just want to burn off any oil or other solvents that might be on the surface of the metal before I put it in the electrolysis bath.

        Looks grate!!! 😁

Just in case anyone is curious, here is the anode after pulling it out of the electrolysis bath. This was after I restored the No. 10 Griswold, Lodge No. 12 Dutch Oven and the Konro Grill grate.

I always find it fascinating that I am pretty much electroplating the anode with iron oxide. I scraped them pretty clean, and I will use this on the next parts of the Konro Grill body and fire grate. You can see the pitting corrosion after I scraped the anodes clean.

I have the body of the grill in the Electrolysis bath as we speak. I threw it in there yesterday morning, so I am guessing we are going to have a lot of progress. Here is what it looks like after 24+ hours. Stay tuned.........but here is what I have so far. I need to remove the damper assembly and damper door. I will strip them when I do the handles removed.

Anyway, i am really happy with how well this is going, this is going to be an awesome restoration, once everything is stripped and ready for oil. I won't bore y'all with any more progress pics, so I will just post the finished results once I am done.

Yep! It will be really cool. I can't wait to see it all done. It is going to look so cool. MsTwiggy

I wanted to share an update on the Konro Grill I have been restoring. I have the grill stripped and seasoned. All the parts came out really well. All I have left to do is turn the handles on my lathe and then I should be good to go for this project.

For the base, I used a solid piece of Walnut. Counter sunk some bolts for mounting and now we are all set. I am really happy with how this is going so far. And I can't wait until I have those handled turned and installed on the grill. I think I am going to go with Paduk or Lace wood for the handles. I am still trying to decide that.

This will be a display piece, so I am not worried about the wood being burned or discolored. (Even though these were designed to have wood in these areas)

I won't bore you with anymore details, but once I get the handles on, I will share that as well. Thanks for taking the time to read my adventures in cast iron restoration.
