Hey gang...I am in the hospital as I type as my oldest recovers from her hip surgery. The procedures went well but last night and today she has found herself in quite a bit of pain! So, please accept my apologizes for subbing in a BBQCS segment for this Pitcast. However, this is a GREAT fill in spot as I recently sat down with the foremost hamburger expert in all the land, George Motz. We cover his background, burger types and some of his faves. We also talk about the plant based revolution as well. Enjoy this interview...it was one of my most favorite of 2019!

Happy to hear the procedure went well, sorry to hear about the pain. Two suggestions: painkillers and Pink Floyd!

It's weird...you go to the hospital where you would figure they would do their best to take the pain "away" and now, because of the opioid epidemic, they seem to only be interested in taking away just a portion of the pain...

BBQCentralShow When I broke my leg last summer I was surprised how accommodating they were with the narcotics. I was given morphine in the ER, and later when they set the leg something that sent me to the DSOM. After surgery the Vicodin didn't cut it and I was given oxycodone. Fortunately I only had to use it for two days. Hopefully your daughter's recovery goes well and quick with tolerable pain. It isn't any fun to be sure.

Late reading this post.
They are way to cautious about the pain meds now. My wife has chronic back pain due to arthritis and when we go the the pain specialist to get her prescription refilled after jumping through all their hoops I feel Like I just pulled a fast one on my dealer. I understand the epidemic but come on.

I wish your daughter well. I tore my achilles a few years back pretty badly. Ortho said on day two I had to have it repaired on day three or I could permanently lose function in my leg. For the operation I chose a nerve block instead of going under. The doctor said I had to take my Vicodin before the block wore off. By history, opiates had always made me feel worse. Whatever pain relief I received was replaced by a room spinning to the point that I throw up. So I told my wife not to fill the prescription. What a mistake.
When the numbness wore off I was screaming and writhing. "Fill the meds!!!" I kept yelling at her. While it likely only took her an hour to get them, it seemed like ten. I only needed them that day and I did not have the vertigo I have had in the past. While I had a significant amount of swelling and soreness in the calf, I remember that the incision was what really hurt like heck.
I hope she has a speedy recovery. If they are reluctant to give her the pain meds, hopefully she is on anti-inflammatory medication and the pain subsides. ComfortablyNumb should know that Pink Floyd only works for old guys like us - call one of her friends for the appropriate music medication.

Greg how is your daughter. I am now awaiting surgery next Wednesday and feel her pain. Guess what. Time to catch up and the BBCS too!!
I have been struggling with this for almost 3 years so I finally gave in for shoulder surgery. I can’t really have pain meds as I play with hot and sharp things for 12 hours a day.
now I’m off work and insert soup Nazi voice here "No pain meds for you!" WTF MAN. I am dying here.
gravity hurts. Anyhow, hope she is better.

Daughter Update: Thanks for asking about her, guys! She is now almost 5 weeks post op. She goes to the Ortho doc in 9 days to (hopefully) get cleared for the start of PT. Being non-weight bearing the past 4+ weeks has been hard for her since she is used to "doing" and not "sitting". The good news is that each day (and week) her pain has gotten much less and her spirits are very strong. So, during this part of post op, I don't think we could have asked for a better result. We are hopeful that her PT will progress the same and she will be cleared to "return to sport" in May or June. That would give her enough time to get back in to volleyball shape for her 2nd season. I will try to keep you updated...but thanks again for asking!!
