I need some new gloves for when I am grilling, such as spinning the grate, handling the charcoal starter, etc. Realizing that there are many brands, I am asking about the materials also. Leather, silicone, other?
Perhaps I got a bad pair of these and perhaps I should have called Noah to discuss, which I did not, but mine were a lot like two pairs with the inside pair and then the outside over them. Bottom line, they were very small in the fingers which made them very difficult to get on and when I pulled them off the "inside pair" in the fingers pulled out of alignment and to some degree inside out, making getting them back on again very difficult and a real hassle. Tossed them in the garbage.
I will admit they are tight but I do have larger hands, I normally need XL gloves. I have never had this problem with mine. Alabama Smoke I don't wear them or any gloves as often as I probably should.
I use Grease Monkeys quite a bit. You can wash them dozens of times before needing to grab a new pair. I use them to move meats around, adjust grates, etc. Definitely plenty of bang for your buck with these.
I use a glove that is very similar to these. I put on a food glove over them when handling meat. They shield the heat enough when turning food with tongs on a hot grill.
Yep - I bought Home Depot welding gloves, much cheaper than the grilling leather gloves and they work great. Only time I’ve felt heat was pulling off CI skillets from the grill.

These are great gloves and there are many different manufacturers so they are easy to find. Great for handling the chimney starter, moving grates, etc. They are soft and flexible enough where you don't loose much dexterity.

A Smokey Joe and the most recent addition a Pit Barrel Jr with bird hanger, 4 hooks and cover. ThermoWorks Smoke 2 probe, DOT, ThermoPops and a Thermapen MK4. 3 TempSpike wireless meat thermometers.
This is what I’m currently using. You do have to be careful of the black part on the back of your hands. They will default/melt if you get too close to the hot coals.
I use welding gloves from Harbor Freight - $8.00 +/- per pair. They get grubby if I handle meat but I just don't handle meat with them. Nitrile over cotton is the only way to go there. I've tried the fancier food handling gloves but I can't seem to get the feel of the food very well e.g. pulling pork, shredding chicken.

For food handling I use laminated garden gloves covered with food grade gloves.
For handling the chimney, rotating the grate, etc, I use Pit Mitts.
For the seriously hot stuff, like when handling moving a hot grate or taking off a diffuser, I swear by these gloves. Use them all the time when cleaning my WSCGC 24" grate on my Summit gasser. I have to flip the grate to scrub the underside and at 600-700 degrees, it's really hot. Never a problem.
These gloves are rated to 900°F direct contact and 1200°F otherwise: Protects in any temperature
Avoid worker injury by providing these heat resistant, wool lined, Kevlar® backed gloves for working around high temperatures.
Aluminized backing, over blended Kevlar® and para aramid blend fabric palm, reflects 90% of radiant heat away from back of hand for optimum protection
Rugged 14" glove, with 11 oz. wool lining, provides radiant heat and abrasion resistance
Protects in any temperature up to 1200°F radiant heat and 900°F short contact heat
I also use this kevlar sleeve to protect my braceleted arms. I usually use them with my Grill Beast or Pit Mitt gloves but they're good with the big kevlar gloves as well.
I use the leather welders gloves recommended by Meathead over on the free side. They extend up to my elbows keeping my lower arms safe from the heat of a smoker and work well. I use them and sometimes channel locks for moving hot heavy metal grates etc. For handling meat, I use a pair of very heavy and thick rubberized gloves. Both pairs of gloves mentioned here can easily be washed with soap and water by simply wearing them at the sink, put dishwashing liquid on them and then washing my hands (which are inside the gloves). When the leather gloves dry, the leather remains relatively soft.
