We had an older freezer fail just before I retired. It was 20 years old and we noticed things were thawing before we got in trouble. The men who delivered our new freezer told us to get a remote alarm for the freezer. They said none of the new freezers last as long as the one that had failed on us. They said the average freezer they haul away is less than 10 years old. I have a cheap remote temp sensor in the freezer, it gives me a false alarm about once a month. I can look at the read out I keep in the kitchen window and see what the temps are in my freezer and the kitchen fridge. I need a better set up, but haven't pulled the trigger on one yet.
