    John Boos cutting boards

Do any of you guys have a John Boos cutting board? They are gold star on this web site, but only 3 1/2 stars on Amazon. I don’t mind spending the money on quality, but 3 1/2 stars concerns me. Happy Labor Day.

I have an 18 x 24 that is a joy to use. I just checked Amazon and all the ones that came up were 4 to 41/2 except 2.

They are some of the highest quality boards you can get. I live about an hour from their shop and have visited a couple times. I like going through their 2nds room, you could pick up items st a good discount.

I have 2 years of their boards and love them.
Just make sure you get the Boo’s board oil and cream. This really helps to keep them from drying out.

            1. I don't put much faith in ratings I see on Amazon. How many times do you see 1 star ratings from people who can barely write their names in the dirt with the pointed end of the stick. I especially don't pay attention to unverified purchasers. They're just trolling.

            2. My main cutting board is a large Boos. It's 25 years old and it will outlast me. I've had to do some light sanding once, about 10 years ago. Other than that I keep it clean and give a good rub down with food grade mineral oil every now and then.

I'd say it has been a great investment.

We have a John Boos 18x24 that is just excellent, fun to use, but heavy. The substantial weight makes it very stable, and it has s fast cutting surface. Highly recommended here.

Maybe the ones on Amazon are counterfeit? I dunno. Might explain the lower rating. I don't use Amazon when I want to make sure something is authentic. I belive I've been a victim in the past.

Since I ordered one from Amazon, you raising the counterfeit question had me worried. I called Boos, and they confirmed they do sell boards to Amazon

Just be sure to use the link from amazing ribs.com before you buy it on Amazon!

I have a round 3" thick cherry board. Great board, very stable and looks good too. Would buy again.

Speaking of WOOD CUTTING BOARDS....I have always used a glass cutting board for reasons......much easier to keep clean. I don't have to worry about any kind of contamination when I wash it with soap and water at each change in food and when finished. I have had people act shocked that I don't use a wood board. I just do not understand the attachment to wood. Can someone enlighten me?

Cutting on glass dulls the edges of your knives very quickly, even with minimal contact.

Glass means death to your cutting edges in about two weeks. I hope you have a good sharpener. The most dangerous thing in the kitchen is a dull knife. Wood is no less easier to keep clean than glass just soap and running water as long as you keep it oiled.

I have been hesitant too. While the John Boos boards I looked at on Amazon said they were being sold by Amazon itself and not a third party, the John Boos’ site list of authorized online dealers for their products does not list Amazon.

Good to know. Boos needs to update their site as Amazon still does not show up on the list of authorized online dealers.

Bought my wife a 18 x 24 for her birthday last year. She loves it, I haven't used it. Best price we found was at a restaurant supply store that is about 15 miles from us.

Thanks for this thread. I’ve had a couple Boos boards saved for later in my cart for a while. I figured the bad reviews were people that didn’t care for them and I feel the feedback here leans that way too.

The Boos cutting board we bought on Amazon on July 18, 2010, was a disappointment within its first year, cracking right away despite my scrupulous cleaning/drying after every use and repeated oiling.

I know my boards and other food surfaces. I won't let anyone use whatever I just cut chicken on, even after washing. I'm also in charge of the steel-wok and iron-skillet and zinc-counter patinas, and of the cleanliness of the wood floor* and stone counter and tub** enamel. And I say to Boos: boo. You failed me.

We've only had it that long because we now barely use it.

I've read Amazon one-star reviews for everything I've bought there, since then. That wood, before being treated, should've served in a stick burner.

                        * Not a recommended food surface.

Sorry you had such a disappointing experience. Can you tell us which board you bought. And the size of it. Amazom sells boards other than Boos did you get a Boos. Show us a picture of how it has split.

I'm not home now but I looked at it last night, and saw that it wasn't the wood so much as the glued seams, which were fissuring open on each end. Per Amazon's never-forgets 2010 order record, it was the "John Boos Block BBQBD Reversible Maple Wood Edge Grain BBQ Cutting Board with Juice Groove, 18 Inches x 12 Inches x 1.5 Inches," $59.95 then and $77.95 now.
