    My Griddle Journey

I wont comment on your reasonings - those are yours and yours alone. You've obviously put a lot of thought into issues that are unique to yourself.

Just in case you haven't (and if you have just disregard me) have you looked at griddle master inserts?

I just got a blackstone 4 burner last year on prime days. Got a good price, the rest is history.

I was using a little griddle on a gas grill. It worked, but it always seemed like a work around. Space was always limited, grease was always there, the grease trough would collect food, and so on. It worked, but had shortfalls.

The stand alone griddle solved all that. Being designed as a griddle and nothing else there aren’t really any shortfalls. Grease drains out of the back, there is a lip around the entire cooking area to keep food in, I have much better temperature control (can keep 2 burners on and 2 off, to have a cooking and keep warm area), plenty of room for cooking domes to melt cheese and stuff, and easy cleanup (crank heat to high, scrape, douse with water, scrape more, wipe). The grease collector comes off and can be dumped in a can then thrown in the trash (don’t dump grease down the drain, it creates fat-bergs that clog sewer lines or your home pipes).

The only downside is you end up with another thing, that is a one trick pony. It takes up space. But if you have a place to keep it that isn’t in the way, that isn’t a big deal.

If you you use your griddle setup often keep an eye open for sales. Blackstone and camp chef are very similar, I don’t think one is better or worse than the other. Blackstone does sell a fancy one through Walmart (with a deep frying thing and a fancier cart), camp chef makes one that can be converted to a grill (although it is a work around grill, sort of like making a grill into
a griddle with aftermarket stuff). But with fall approaching sales on summer stuff will be here soon. So something to consider. No need to buy right now, just something to think about.

i was going to say something similar. If you have the space...

I have the smaller 28" blackstone griddle and its PLENTY of space for a family of 4, even some guests. And its remarkably affordable all things considered. For 70 bucks you can get a drip'n'griddle. For 170 you can get a dedicated, stand alone , kick ass griddle. Again, it all depends on whether that suits ur needs or not.

Hugh I hear that. If it works, no need to fix it. But the thing is just checking now I found the 2 burner blackstone for $70 with shipping. Older model (front drain) 4 burners for $130. If you aren’t in a hurry you can get good prices. I’m looking for the tabletop unit, under the excuse of "our hurricane kit". But really it’s for tabletop cooking after the toddler goes to sleep.

Well, kinda along the same line - if you have the room, a standalone is nice. I like my Cuisinart 360 and Walmart now has an unbelievable price $125.50. I paid $197 for mine and think it is well worth that. For $125,50, I'm almost tempted to buy another just to get a second side flip up shelf and some spare parts. Walmart has these in stock at my local store. This griddle is sturdy, well built, and easy to clean. Pancakes, eggs, and stir fry are great on it.

grantgallagher - I've kind of backed into where I am now. Didn't have a burner on my BBQ for cooking fish or things like breakfasts so I bought a small camp stove since that is what I had used all my life. I bought the Drip 'N Griddle when I bought the Slow 'N Sear to keep the Kettle cleaner and improve air flow. Just a bonus that it was a griddle since I didn't griddle at the time. Then when I did start to griddle, I didn't care for it as my primary griddle strategy so I added 1 GG Griddle. So I'm pausing at this point trying to decide to keep going down this incremental path or step back and get something like a Blackstone and be done with it.

I was there. I decided to cut my losses after the extra large little griddle and go with the blackstone 36 inch with rear drain. I gave the little griddle to my dad, He also used it a few times and bought a blackstone 36 inch. I still have the little griddle, but I might garage sale it at this point. I’m not sorry I bought it, it got used. But.....I also think I made the right choice upgrading. I use the blackstone more.

Pricing in Canada is so frustrating. The cheapest I can find the 28 inch Blackstone is $248 Cdn at Walmart (approx. $188 U.S.). If I buy in the U.S., the shipping kills me in addition to the exchange. Where are you seeing it for $70?

$70 is for a table top griddle. I just bought the Blackstone 28 inch and it was $180 USD. I LOVE it...

Having a a Somerset IV outdoor gas range with the option of one or two Blackstone-type griddles at one time is a game changer for me, Hugh . I don't know what they are in Canada, but for $300 from Home Depot, the versatility is amazing.

P.S. you may also want to look at the Steelmade Griddle for your gasser. Uncle Bob turned me on to this. Look at this post for more infomation: https://pitmaster.amazingribs.com/fo...044#post685044

Hugh - I went through a similar griddle journey, but not quite as elaborate as yours. Did research and finally bought the large Little Griddle for my old Genesis. Fits perfectly and cooks great. One of the better equipment purchases I've bought lately.

Gonna do some bacon cheeseburgers on it tonight.

That version of the Little Griddle costs not much less than the 28" Blackstone up here so its harder to make a case for it.

Foot print is smaller. I store the little griddle inside the Genesis. But the Blackstone would be easier to move around than a Genesis.

You guys are not helping my MCS!!! No support for my cheap and cheerful strategy. Now I have to save up to buy a fancy 3 burner stove and griddle. I also need to save some money to add an outdoor bedroom to my outdoor kitchen, because that is where my wife will make me sleep when I pull the trigger on that one!

Did you look at the Steelmade Pro griddle that I referenced, Hugh? The heat distribution on your gasser with it is much more uniform than the Blackstone.
There is a special magic to any food cooked on a well-seasoned Flat Top Grill that only gets better with use. Flat Tops are the perfect combination of a regular griddle and outdoor grill. The smooth, flat cooking surface allows you to cook any kind of food from steaks and burgers to eggs and stir-fry. Bring your joy of

plus it has an optional grease catcher.

fzxdoc - I didn't look at the Steelmade initially because I thought the shipping costs for 21 pounds would make it prohibitive. Talked to them today and they have a flat $25 shipping fee which puts them in the running.

I've decided not to make the jump to a full size stove/griddle like the Camp Chef or the Blackstone. Never say never, but I wanted to take a step back now and consider it.

I just need more griddle space for now. My options are:

Camp Chef 22x16 cast iron which I can get locally for $60. A good solution for me, I can quit flipping GG's, I would use my existing GG to sear on and leave the rest of the GG's rail up.

I still like the option of getting a second GG Griddle with some gap rails if I want walls. Price with shipping works out pretty close to the Camp Chef CI griddle. I really like the light weight nature of this solution and the fact that I can clean in my kitchen. But messing around with all those pieces might get tedious.

The Steel Made solution comes out almost double after shipping and exchange in Canada. I don't see the advantage to it over the cast iron Camp Chef. It is 2 inches wider which is good. Heavier though. Cleaning would be the same. I would be putting the cast iron over the Grill Grates which would mean I already have very even heat. I don't know if there is much difference in maintaining cast iron vs. steel?

The Little Griddle is a contender but shipping and exchange rate takes it out of the running.

Current course and speed I'll get another GG Griddle or the Camp Chef cast iron griddle.

As usual, thanks for weighing in. Given your experience with GG's and the fact you just bought a Camp Chef stove, I wanted your opinion.

You've got a lot of good options, Hugh . After a little deliberation, I'm sure you'll make a wise choice. Let us know what you end up getting and how it works out for you.
