    BBQ chop box

Went to a pork butt contest this past Saturday. I was inspired to get out to the shop and make a chop box. The chopping surface is 23.5 inches by 16.5 inches. Trying to use lumber I already had so the chopping board is oak with southern yellow pine for the sides. Have to do a little more sanding then I will put a bees wax finish on. I better not make it too pretty or I will not want to take a cleaver to it.

What kind of wood did you use, Mike? Looks like pine for the sides and a hardwood for the bottom.

I had some 1 inch oak left over from another project. Cut 3 boards about 5.5 inches wide and edge glued with a waterproof food safe glue. The side are yellow pine.

Nice work, North Carolina Mike! I like how you ran the grain pattern of the southern yellow pine so neatly around the sides. Craftsman's eye there.

I like the grain pattern in the yellow pine but I had forgotten how bad it splinters.

We sided our house (a converted 1915 timber-framed barn) in southern yellow pine. I agree - it is onery stuff!

Nice work Mike! Now, are you a one or two cleaver man when it comes to chopping?

Only have one cleaver now but plan on getting another Old Hickory like the one I use now.

Very nicely done, Brother! I got plenty hard / soft wood scraps, from previous projects...

            Looks good.
Building these could be a possible revenue stream at retirement.

That's too nice to be a chopping box. Used to deliver breakfast in bed, it's just right.

North Carolina Mike And if we don't hear from you for a while we can use our imaginations as to what happened to you.

Fortunately the box was heavy enough that she could not swing it very hard. It was suggested that I fry my own bacon in the morning.

Nice job! I would be afraid of getting a cleaver anywhere near that purdy tray.
