What fuel do use with the SnS?

I guess most people use briquettes with their Slow ‘N Sear, but then I thought: that’s just my assumption. So what fuel do you guys put in yours? Anybody run 8-10 hour cooks with charcoal?

I can get almost 15hrs at 225 with B&B Briquets, in the 22. The 26 is a not that efficient.

    KBB for a rib cook.

I get 8-10 hours on my 26 at 225. It depends a lot on how much meat I have in it and what the ambient temperature is outside.

Troutman waaay bigger lid for increased heat loss. Thing is a beast.

Confirmed. My 26” was much less even with the xl SNS. It has a lot of surface area and requires a lot more fuel to run. Even the xl basket isn’t that much bigger.

I just saw a T Roy Cooks video where he used lump in a 22" with a new SNS to cook a brisket hot and fast, like 5 hours. He had to re-load the SNS like 3 times in 5 hours. I don't think lump is best suited for an SNS, just doesn't compact as well as briquettes.

I agree, when I had my SNS, I was using it to cut down on the ash. But I needed to reload quite a bit. I was also using crappy lump.

I clicked charcoal, when I meant briquettes.

Well, I should not be able to vote. I haven't used the Kettle and SnS yet. But for the record it'll be briquettes tomorrow in the SnS.

Seconded. Mine gets here Monday and the KBB is waiting.

I used to use only lump charcoal so I used that for a while when I first got my SnS. Then I started using briquettes. But now I don't use the SnS for long cooks because I prefer using a kamado thereby not having to refuel. At the cabin where I cook on a 22" Weber, I use the snake method which also solves the issue of running out of fuel as well as the issue with the SNS getting clogged up with ash.

I’ve never had my SnS clog with ash...I have the one without the grid in the bottom.

That's probably why. I should mention mine usually does not clog. It generally works great and is a big step up from the Weber baskets.

I have the SnS+ with the grid, and ash is an minor issue, but it's not difficult to deal with. I just jab the oversized BBQ fork that has no other practical use in the basket and stir it around a bit and it knocks them down with little disruption to the cooking process.

I’ve gotten 10-12 hours at 225 during the summer. Lately I’ve been cooking at 275 and have been getting about 6 hours, but it’s been cool outside.

12 hours at 225 using Weber briquettes is pretty common for me.

HouseHomey yes sir 22”. A bit longer in the SnS Kamado.

I use Weber briquettes in my 26”, and typical results line up with what fuzzydaddy said. I also agree with something Dadof3Illinois mentioned in that it really depends on how much meat I have in there and how cold it is outside. Only time I ever had to refill I was cooking three butts at 275-300F. If it’s cold outside, moving the SNS in (towards the middle) a couple inches really conserves energy.

I am using the Weber briquettes currently. I have not had to refill or worry about ash yet. I typically only do smaller pieces in the kettle. when the meat gets larger, it goes in the barrel

KBB is the most consistent fuel for my buck. You can count coals without a doubt.

I used my SnS regular forever on my 26 and loved it.

I cook with with my top vent wide open or barely closed for about 90%.

I like the hotter fires and the 26/SnS combo "is a Beast" like Jerod Broussard said.

I think the 26 is less efficient but I don’t care. If I have a longer cook I refuel early so I don’t have to wait on it then I just let it do it’s thing.

Im not that OCD about coals. I don’t wanna fuss with it, guess or wonder if it’ll be enough to finish the cook. I just add it and cook.

The 22 is crazy good with the long cooks!!

also I’ve seen kettles that leak like crazy and some snug and others in betweenst!

Any way slice it kettles rock and the SnS is a game changer!
