Cleaning bottom side of grill grates

I finally flipped my grill grates over last night to use the flat(or griddle style) side of the grates. I couldn't believe the amount of crap on the bottom of the grates over the last couple months of occasional use. Any who, what is the best way to clean this side of the grate before cooking? My grate brush didn't really touch the build up so I resorted to the foil ball to knock off and move most of the build up before cooking. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I have their detailing tool, which is basically a fancy paint scraper with some sharp points to it. I use it to scrape the bottom of the grates pretty clean with success.

I find it good to scrape the tops of the rails, the flat side, and the edges actually help loosing up some crap down in the valleys that a brush doesn't get. When apart, I use the tool to clean out the groove where the panels join to each other.

Paint scraper works great. That is what I use. Heating them up and throwing some hot water on them will allow the steam to pop the baked stuff off the surface. Just don't use too much water, just enough to splash on the surface.

I've got a portable camp gasser that I set them on to warm them up. As jfmorris pointed out, the fancy scraper is no more than a regular paint scraper...

Another tip to consider is to rearrange the grate sections between cooks. I move the icky sections to the hotter areas of the grill where they will gradually burn clean. If the cook plan allows, I'll also put the dirtiest side facing down so residues can drop off as they loosen.

I do a fair bit of indirect cooking where the side sections get pretty hot and the center sections stay cooler, and this really helps.

            I use this very method.
