I bought one of the Buckethead vacuums from Home Depot to help clean out my Ranch. Took about 5 seconds before the ash clogged it up. Seems like it would do fine sucking up chunks of stuff or pellets or something like that but not ash.

I use a small Rigid shop vac (home depot brand). I think it’s a 2.5 or 3 gallon vac. It’s perfect for my Primo, but most of the time I just use a tool to pull most of the ash out (an ash dust pan is good to have for this unless you don’t mind a mess).
I only use the vac when the charcoal load is light, or it’s mostly small pieces and I want to give it a better cleaning. Every 4 - 6 months I do this. I remove the charcoal grate, firebox, and bottom plate and get it all out.
Neefless to say, make darn sure the charcoal is VERY cold. The airflow inside a vacuum cleaner will take the smallest little spark of a flame and turn it into a problem very quickly.

Well, I recently ordered this one and it will arrive tomorrow or Thursday. Hope it works, though I know ashes must be totally out. I wanted something small. I'll try to let you all know how it works; I'll just be vacuuming small amounts of ash out of pellet grill.

Hmmm... something went wrong with previous comment - this is what I ordered - I hope...

Some of the post above got me thinking about a dust separator. I'm thinking maybe this small unit to go with the small vacuum - I don't want to mount this to a 5 gallon bucket. Usually when I vacuum the pellet grill I only get a couple of ounces of ash.
Funny some of the reviewers of this complain that it is too small, though the dimensions are very clearly given, Continued next comment...
