So I purchased a Cabela's meat slicer on sale for $79.99. Brought it home, sliced a roast beef and the serrated blade just does not cut thin enough at all. Anyone have tips on what the best meat slicer is? Any tips? I want one that is obviously reliable but able to shave meat thin. Thanks

Keep your eyes peeled on CL and look for an older Hobart, Berkel, Globe, or other commercial slicer. You can get a pretty good deal on a high quality slicer (if you have a place to store the beast).

I have the Avantco 1/4 hp deli slicer. It cost somewhere between $250-$275. I does a really nice job but the angle is not optimal. Cleaing it is work. It weighs about 35 lbs.
I have used the really expensive professional models that have a greater angle. They also cost more than I was allowed to spend. The advantage to the better units is they handle hot meats much better. Without the angle on mine, hot meat shreds a bit even after sharpening the blade. I also get a lot of food under the blade unit.
For cold meat slicing, I really could not be happier. I get the shaved meat you are asking about and can get really good even fat cuts, as well. My model is also not recommended for cheeses and/or frozen meats.
To get the features that would put it into the next tier you would have to double that price, at the least. I checked Craigslist often before buying mine as CaptainMike suggests. There just wasn't any inventory close to me. I used to go through the $100 slicers (like yours) yearly. It is why I opted to go to the next level.Last edited by tbob4; December 22, 2018, 11:11 PM.

I'd recommend the CF 615, but find that they have discontinued that and the 609. It seems that their replacements are the 615A at a price bump of ~$100 or MSRP of $249. The biggest problems with the countertop models are their lack of power - slow and steady is the only way to go. They also tend to flex and lose adjustment - so they are somewhat finicky to consistently slice thinly You'll never get 'see through' slices so adjust your expectations accordingly, but you will get thin slices. They also work best after the meat's had a night's rest in the fridge.

I just bought a Beswood slicer and I couldn't be happier. I searched Craigslist for a while but never got anything good in my price range. It is on Amazon for $299.
BESWOOD 10" Premium Chromium-plated Carbon Steel Blade Electric Deli Meat Cheese Food Slicer Commercial and for Home use 240W BESWOOD250 https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01AQH636Q..._FwVhCbXAXBPF3
10", 1/3 HP, 35 lb, cus through cold meat like nothing is there. I cut a big block of cheese the other day, must be cold and I've heard it helps to spray it with water. I haven't tried hot meat yet

2 reverse flow stick burners (I built)
Propane griddle
3 charcoal grills
pellet grill
Meat slicer, meat grinder, sausage stuffer
I watched eBay and Craig’s list for months to find a berkel 13†commercial slicer for $250. Works great! I slice bacon frozen.

If you know what you want, google express has a code (I think it's HOLIDAY18) for 10 or 20% off your first order, and most people I know haven't used that as a shopping option ever before.... Got the wife a tablet and saved I think it was $20 or so which bought me 40lb of pellets

I got this one

From Williams Sonoma and it works fine. Includes a serrated and bonus smooth blade and right now is coming with a $25 gift card.
I have had it about 10 months now and use it 2-3 times a week to slice meat for my lunches. Takes a bit of practice to get the cleaning routine down, but now I can clean it pretty quickly.Last edited by mgaretz; December 23, 2018, 05:47 PM.

"Beer is proof that God loves us and wants us to be happy." ~Benjamin Franklin
I bought a slicer at Academy a few years back and it broke within 15 minutes. Just about all of my kitchen appliances are from the 1940s and 1950s so I was berating myself for even buying a cheap modern slicer when I got on ebay and bought a late 1930s commercial American Slicing Machine deli meat slicer (weighs about 85 lbs). I had to do a little work on it but I have never looked back. Just used it today as a matter of fact. I restored another one (completely disassembled it, cleaned it, and had it powder coated - except the motor, I color matched some regular paint for it) and gave it to a friend.

Got AMPTO CHF250l; of course, it's pricey, but the quality makes it for me; besides, I got in from a commercial kitchen equipment store as I wanted to be sure it'll be okay.

I just recently bought this one on Craig's List. I spent a couple hours cleaning it up and it is a beast. Cleaning after using it is kind of a pain but so far the deli style slices of Beef Eye of Round were worth it. One of my favorites is smoking my own cold meat for sandwiches. It is a nice addition to my arsenal.
