I have a Chef’s Choice 615 from Amazon. It works decently. If I was only using it a couple times a year for a little bit of meat it would serve me fine. I processed more than 50lbs of bacon at a time on it many times. Ran like a champ.
I recently purchased a used Berkel 909/1 from a closing deli. Regularly saw them for $350-400. Got this one from Facebook Market for $260. Significant improvement to my ability to cut a lot of bacon.
If you plan plan on using it a lot I would recommend watching craigslist or whatever for a used commercial quality slicer. The difference is night and day.
If you’re just going to use it a few times for not a lot of meat then the consumer ones are most likely fine. I would look for one with a higher degree of tilt than the one I bought if I were to go back and get one again. The Berkel id a 45* angle, so it’s a lot easier to feed the meat.
Also, get a non serrated blade for cutting meat. The ChefsChoice came with a serrated blade which worked, but not as well if you want thin slices.
I went through a Chef's Choice once a year. At $100 it is a good deal but over the years it becomes expensive. It really depends on how often you use it. I used it a lot. I ended up buying an Avantco this past year. It will not give out but I would not do it again because the angle is not right and clean up is a mess. Price was the issue - my wife and I argued about the price and the weight of the meat slicer. If I were to buy a slicer again I would go with a greater angle and with a slicer that was rated to slice cheese and frozen meat. It becomes costly to do so, but you get quality for the price. If you cut a few times a year and don't cut big meat, go for the Chef's Choice. I really liked them other than the burn out factor. If you need something more industrial, bypass cheap models like I bought. Get 1/2 hp at least, and get one with a nice angle.

I would check Craig's list of a good industrial one. I got one for a bout $200 and it is an absolute beast. I only use it a few times a year to make jerky, but it is great to have.
I got a Chefs Choice from Williams Sonoma (a 610 I think) as it came with both serrated and non-serrated blades. It was cheaper that way than buying it from Amazon and buying the extra blade separately. I’ve had it since February and use it 2-3 times a week to slice beef, turkey and salami for lunch sandwiches. I have used it once to slice bacon. So far it has served me well.
I found this Globe slicer at a garage sale this past summer for $30.00 or $35.00 dollars. Clearly needs some clean up and minor repairs but runs smooth as silk. This model was built in the late 40's and early 50's so it has seen it's share of slicing. Porcelain surface was a dead give away about it's age. Have it set for a winter refurbish project. I expect that once cleaned up for food grade use it will do nicely.
Check FB Marketplace and Craigslist for a big commercial unit. Anything by Berkel, Hobart, Globe, or Bizerba will be great. If you look and are patient you can usually find a good one for $200 or so. I have a Berkel 827A that I picked up for $200 that works great for slicing bacon.
My parent's got me a cheap Chefs Choice model from Amazon a year or so ago for my birthday. I took it out of the box, turned it on, tried to slice a belly and quickly packed it back up and returned it. Definitely worth getting a bigger commercial unit if you will be doing any significant slicing. I slice up 30 lbs of bacon every 3-4 weeks and this one does a great job.
I was just coming to the forum to post this exact question lol I love this forum. Thanks to all that replied. I was going to buy the chefs choice off amazon but now I’m gonna search around craigslist.
I watched Craig’s list and e-bay for a long time and found a commercial Berkel for $250.00. Could not be any happier with it. I saw a globe porcelain coated one similar to pictured above this week for $200.00. I have also used one like that and it worked great. I would be looking for a commercial one for certain.
The underlying message is be patient if you plan to find a good used commercial model at a decent price. It can be done but not as common as we all would hope.
Yeah. If you see one for less than $300 I would jump on it. Even offer less and see if they’ll take it. The difference is night and day.
The only this, they’re heavy and much larger. So having a spot to put it is important. My Berkel is probably 60ish lbs and takes up way too much room on my kitchen counter. So I bought a stainless steel prep table for the garage to use it on. Still worth it.
